UNITED STATES - GREECE: 1860, envelope from New York to Athens, franked with 1857/61, 1 c. blue as 'Carrier fee', tied by "23 NEW YOR AM. PKT. OCT. 29"; endorsed "Via England" but transported via Prussia and Trieste with red "Aachen 3 12" on reverse next to arrival mark (in mistake 3.11., Julian calendar). On front noted in blue crayon "55 10 15" neukreuzer for the conveyance from New York to the Greek harbour and in red crayon the total due of "255" lepta to be paid by the recipient. A very fine and most likely unique part paid letter to Greece. Signed Holcombe and Todd

A fine and scarce  entire from the well known Washburn correspondence. (Scott 119)

UNITED STATES - EGYPT: 1860, envelope with imprint "U.S. Customs House, New Orleans. Collector's Office. Official Business" and endorsed "George S. Denison Spe. agt. & act. Coll. of Customs" to the Consul general at Alexandria, franked with 1861/67, 3 c. rose in block of 15, tied by "New Orleans La. Dec. 9, 1864" cds. and additional target cancels. The franking covered the rate via great Britain, but the letter was forwarded via Aachen (29.1.) and Trieste (1.1.), arrival mark of the Austrian PO (11.1.). Very Fine and highly exhibitable. Prepaid with 38 cents till Alexandria and taxed here with "1/-" for the conveyance to Hongkong, to be paid by the recipient. Just 5 letters from The US via Trieste to China have been recorded.

TURKISH EMPIRE (THESSALY) - AUSTRIA: 1870: Entire letter  from Volos to Trieste, dated inside '11/23 July 1870' (Gregorian resp. Julian calender), franked with Egypt 1867, 1 pi. red, tied by black 'retta' as the Volos Consular Post Office datestamp had yet to be placed in use. The cover travelled with the Khedivial Mail Line to Syros with frontside "SYROS 12 JULY 70", rated '25' lepta in blue crayon (equal to 10 kreuzer to be paid by the recipient) and was forwarded to the Austrian Lloyd express line from Constantinople to Triest.; on reverse Trieste arrival cds (July 28). An outstanding and unique entire - the Consular Office on Volos was announced to open on July 14, 1870, thus this cover was mailed on the second of the (weekly) services. Signed A. Diena, A. Bolaffi and Todd,  Certificate F. Zanetti (1999).

EGYPT - DENMARK: 1857, unpaid entire letter from Alexandria to Aalborg, dated inside "31er October 1857", showig on revers forwarding agent handstamp "DUMMREICHER FRERES & Co. ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE", on front "COL VAPORE D'ALESSANDRIA" next to blue boxed "6¼" (silbergroschen) of Triest for the conveyance to the danish border, corresponding with manuscript "8½" Hamburg shilling. In Denmark a total of "36" skilling were charged to the receipient, including 8 skilling internal Danish postage. An interesting letter with scarce destination.

CHINA - AUSTRIA:  1780, entire letter endorsed inside "Canton le 20 Janvier 1780 / Par le Vau le Prince de Kaunitz" adressed to Count Charles de Proly, financier of the 'Austrian East India Company' at Trieste. The letter was transported on the Austrian vessel 'Fürst Kaunitz' via the Cape of Good Hope; due to the Siege of Gibraltar, the ship was stopped here by the british frigate 'Britannia' to controle the load; the letter was opened and endorsed "Cette lettre a ete detacheteé par le Capte. de la fregate la Britania anglaise Commande par capt. Tompton. Le 1er aoute 1780 (signature)". Apperantly the ship was held up at Malaga and the letter posted here, showing on front clear "ANDALUCIA BACA"; according to the 'Wiener Zeitung' the 'Fürst Kaunitz' arrived at Trieste on October 4th 1780. A spectacular and very early letter from China, supposed to be the earliest to central Europe.
