BAVARIA - GREECE: 1859,  double rate envelope to Athens, franked with 1854, 18 kr. orange in horizontal strip of 3, very nice colour and full to large margins from the lower left corner of the sheet with complete marginal lines and narrow margin, each value ideally cancelled by numeral "522", with adjacent  "TIRSCHENREUTH 2/9", addressed to King Otto of Greece (son of the Bavarian King Ludwig I), carried via Vienna and Trieste with transit marks on reverse. The postage consists of 18 kr. Union rate and "30 Nkr. sea postage / 20 Nkr. Greek postage" as noted on the front. One of the most fascinating covers of Bavarian philately in excellent condition; certificate Sem BPP.

1859, Briefkuvert nach Athen, frankiert mit 1854, 18 Kreuzer gelblichorange im waagerechten 3er-Streifen, sehr schön farbfrisch und voll- bis überrandig aus der linken unteren Bogenecke mit vollständigen Randlinien und schmalem Bogenrand, jeder Wert ideal entwertet durch gMR "522", mit nebengesetztem Halbkreisstempel "TIRSCHENREUTH 2/9", adressiert "Seiner Königliche Majestät des Königs Otto von Griechenland in Athen" (Sohn des bayerischen Königs Ludwig I.), befördert über Wien und Triest mit rückseitigen Durchgangsstempeln. Der Brief ist für die 2. Gewichtsstufe frankiert mit 18 Kr. Vereinsporto sowie "30 Nkr. Seeporto / 20 Nkr. griech. Porto". BAVARIA - EGYPT: 1865, cover from Eichstädt to Cairo, entirely prepaid with 1862, 18 kr. vermilion, 9 kr. brown and 1 kr. yellow, all with full to large margins and in fresh colour, tied by open codwheel "106" with adjacent cds. "EICHSTÄDT 16 5"; on reverse transit marks of Vienna, Triest and Alexandria and blue arrival mark. The letter was fully paid with 9 kr. Union postage, 11 kr. sea postage till Alexandria and 8 kr. internal Egyptian postage, thus straigt line "Franca" on front. A very fine, most attractive and very rare letter. 1865, Briefkuvert von Eichstädt nach Kairo, frankiert mit 1862, 18 Kr. zinnoberrot, 9 Kr. braun und 1 Kr. gelb, alle voll- bis breitrandig und farbfrisch, mit oMR "106" und nebengesetztem "EICHSTÄDT 16 5"; rückseitig Transitstempel von Wien, Triest und Alexandria und blauer Ankunftsstempel. BAVARIA - JAPAN, 1869, Entire letter from Nürnberg to Yokohama, franked with 1867, 2 copies 12 kreuzer vermilion,1 kreuzer green and 3 kreuzer rose, all tied by numeral "356" with adjacent "NÜRNBERG 13 MAR. 1869"; on reverse transit marks of Vienna (14.3.), Trieste (15.3.) and Hongkong (6.5.). The 12 kr. values cut into, the other values affected by light bend due to letter contens.  Letters from the German states to Japan are rare, from Bavaria only one further letter via Trieste has been recorded.

1869, Kompletter Faltbrief von Nürnberg nach Yokohama, frankiert mit 1867, 2 Exemplare 12 Kreuzer zinnoberrot, 1 Kreuzer grün und 3 Kreuzer rosa, alle  mit oMR "356" und nebengesetztem "NÜRNBERG 13 MAR. 1869"; rückseitig Transitstempel von Wien (14.3.), Triest (15.3.) und Hongkong (6.5.) . Die 12 Kr.-Werte angeschnitten, die anderen Werte mit leichter, inhaltsbedingter Druckspur. Briefe aus den altdeutschen Staaten nach Japan sind sehr selten, aus Bayern ist nur ein weiterer Brief über Triest registriert.

BREMEN - CHINA: 1865, lettersheet with boxed "BREMEN 7/12" via Triest (10.12.) and Alexandria (18.12.) to Hongkong with arrival mark (26.1.). The letter was prepaid with "6" groschen till Alexandria, here charged with "1/-" in blue crayon, to be paid by the receipient. 2 vertical filing creases, still fine. A rare letter, just one similar letter from Bremen to China recorded.

1865, Briefhülle mit Ra.2 "BREMEN 7/12" über Triest (10.12.) und Alexandria (18.12.) nach Hongkong mit Ankunftsstempel (26.1.). Der Brief wurde mit "6" Groschen bis Alexandria bezahlt, hier mit "1/-" in blauer Kreide taxiert, die vom Empfänger eingezogen wurden. 2 vertikale Briefbüge, sonst gut. Ein seltener Brief; es ist nur ein ähnlicher von Bremen nach China registriert.

HAMBURG - INDIA - ZANZIBAR: 1859, part paid lettersheet adressed to Zanzibar via forwarding adress "George S. King & Co., Bombay", prepaid with "8" Shilling Hamburg currency till Alexandria; transported via Trieste (handstamp "15" on reverse), Alexandria (16.4., charged "1/-") and Bombay (11.5.), here charged with "St. Bg. As 8" to be paid by the reeipient. A fine and rare cover, the only recorded from Hamburg to India via Triest.
The sender of the letter, Hamburg merchant Adolph Jacob Hertz retained the Brothers Horn as his permanent Zanzibar-based representatives from the 1840s to 1859.

1859, teilbezahlte Briefhülle adressiert nach Sansibar über die Nachsendeadresse "George S. King & Co., Bombay", bar bezahlt mit "8" Hamburger Schilling  bis Alexandria; befördert über Triest (rückseitig Taxstempel "15"), Alexandria (16.4., taxiert mit "1/-") und Bombay (11.5.), hier taxiert mit "St. Bg. As 8" zu Lasten des Empfängers. Ein schöner und seltener Brief, der einzig registrierte von Hamburg über Triest nach Indien.
 

HANOVER - INDIA: 1859, fully prepaid lettersheet with large part of contents via Trieste and the 'Overland Mail' to Calcutta, India, franked with 3 gr. dark orange in horizontal strip of 5, the right stamp slightly touched on the right, otherwise full to wide margins, 1 gr. rose and horizontal pair 3 pfg. rose (these partly touched or slightly faulty) with lightly applied cds. "BEVERSTEDT 5/8" (1859). The foreign share of 13½ gr. is noted on the front and back of the entire, but in Triest by mistake only marked "15" for the paid share to Alexandria instead of "15/52" for the entire prepaid amount and therefore charged at Alexandria additionally "1/-" in black ink (somewhat faint, but visible over the strip), corresponding boxed "CALCUTTA STEAMLETTER / 1859 SEP 8 / Steam Bc./India Do." with handwritten "8" (Ana) on reverse. An exceptionally rare and interesting letter with a rare strip and in very fine condition for this destination. 1859, Briefhülle mit großem Teil des Inhaltes über Triest und die 'Overland Mail' nach Calcutta, Indien, frankiert mit 3 Gr. dunkelorange im waagerechten 5er-Streifen, der rechte Wert rechts leicht berührt, sonst alle voll- bis breitrandig, 1 Gr. rosa und waagerechtem Paar 3 Pfg. rosa (diese teils berührt bzw. gering fehlerhaft) mit leicht aufgesetztem DKr. "BEVERSTEDT 5/8" (1859). Das Weiterfranko in Höhe von 13½ Gr. ist vorder- und rückseitig vermerkt, jedoch in Triest nur der Anteil bis Alexandria mit "15" Neukreuzern notiert , statt des komplett vorausbezahlten Betrages von "15/52"; entsprechend in  Alexandria mit "1/-" nachtaxiert, in Indien "CALCUTTA STEAMLETTER / 1859 SEP 8 / Steam Bc./Indien Do." mit handschriftlichen "8" (Ana) angebracht. Ein außerordentlich seltener und interessanter Auslandsbrief mit einer auf Brief außerordentlich seltenen Streifeneinheit und in für diese Destination frischer und attraktiver Erhaltung; sign. PRUSSIA - GREECE: 1863, official tripple rate lettersheet with red wax seal on reverse from "WEISSENSEE 28/1" to the Prussian embassy at Athens, free of charge within the German Postal Union, franked upon arrival with consecutive printings 5 l. green, 10 l. orange and 2 copies 80 l. rose, tied by Athens cds. (30.1.). Charged in transit with "45" new kreuzer in blue crayon and in Greece with a total postage due of "175" lepta, to be collected from the recipient. 3 stamps affected by horizontal crease (originally affixed around the edge of the entire), otherwise fine. A most unusual and scarce entire.

1863, Dienst-Briefhülle der 3. Gewichtsstufe mit rückseitigem rotem Wachssiegel von "WEISSENSEE 28/1" an die preußische Botschaft in Athen; portofrei innerhalb des Deutschen Postvereins, Im Transit mit "45" Neukreuzern  in blau taxiert und in Griechenland mit einem Gesamtporto von "175" Lepta,  frankiert mit 1862/68, 5 L. grün, 10 L. orange und 2 Exemplaren 80 L. rosa mit DKr. "ATHEN 30 JAN.63" . 3 Marken mit horizontalem Bug (ursprünglich um den Rand geklebt), sonst gute Erhaltung. Ein interessanter und in dieser Form sehr seltener Brief.

PRUSSIA - AUSTRALIA (VICTORIA): 1867, envelope from Mettkau to Harkaway, franked on reverse with 1861/66, ½ sgr. orange, 1 sgr. rose, pair 2 sgr. ultramarine and 10 sgr. rose, tied by boxed "METTKAU24/10"; transported via Trieste (28.10.) and Alexandria (11.11), here additionally franked with GB 1 sh. green, tied by "B01";  on reverse arrival marks of Melbourne and Harkaway (both 13.1.68). The franking partly with small faults, 10 sgr. somewhat damaged. A fine and rare letter from Prussia to Australia. Certificate Brettl BPP (2008)

SAXONY - TURKISH EMPIRE (IRAQ): 1867, envelope to Baghdad, endorsed "via Trieste-Beyrouth" and franked with coat of arms 5 ngr. with cds. "ZWICKAU BAHNH. 6 VII 67"; on reverse transit marks of Trieste and Constantinople ; cover and stamp light bend due to contents, otherwise fine. A very rare letter to the Near East from the well-known Oehlschläger correspondence.

1867,  Briefkuvert nach Bagdad mit Leitvermerk "via Triest-Beyrouth", frankiert mit Wappen 5 Ngr. mit DKr. "ZWICKAU BAHNH. 6 VII 67", rückseitig Transitstempel von Triest und Konstantinopel; Umschlag und Marke leichte, durch den Inhalt bedingte Druckspur. Ein außerordentlich seltener Brief in den vorderen Orient aus der bekannten Oehlschläger-Korrespondenz.
 

SAXONY - INDIA: 1867, postal stationery envelope coat of arms 3 ngr. brown with 2 ngr. blue and 5 ngr. grey blue, tied by cds. "FRANKENBERG 16/II 67", as part paid double rate cover to Trichinopoly, Madras presidency; prepaid till Alexandria and here charged with "2/-" for the conveyance to India with corresponding  "St. Bg. Rs 1" applied at Bombay. 5 ngr. with bend and few short perfs where applied over the edge of the cover, otherwise fine. A rare part paid letter.

1867, Ganzsachenumschlag Wappen 3 Ngr. braun mit 2 Ngr. blau und 5 Ngr. graublau, mit DKr. "FRANKENBERG 16/II 67", als teilbezahlter Doppelfbrief nach Trichinopoly, Madras; bezahlt bis Alexandria und hier mit "2/-" für die Beförderung nach Indien taxiert mit entsprechendem "St. Bg. Rs 1" von Bombay . 5 Ngr. durch Randklebung  Bug und wenige kurze Zähne, sonst in guter Erhaltung. Ein seltener Brief.

SAXONY - CHINA: 1860, triple rate lettersheet (quadruple for the british share) to Canton, franked with 1851/63, Johann 10 ngr. blue in strip of 5, 5 ngr. vermilion, 3 ngr. on yellow and 1 ngr. on rose and two copies coat of arms 3 pfg. green, all tied by numeral "3" with adjacent "DRESDEN NEUST:BAHNHOF 5/III 60"; on front and reverse transit marks of Triest, Alexandria and Hongkong. On reverse noted "45" nkr. sea postage to Alexandria and "2fl. 8 (nkr.)" postage beyond Alexandria, the later noted on front as "4/-". The franking with small faults, the left 10 ngr. and the 5 ngr. affected by vertical cover creases. One of the highest recorded frankings of Saxony and in combination with the strip of 5 of the 10 ngr. stamp and the rare destination China a unique item and one of the most impressive overseas' covers of the German States.

1860, Briefhülle der dritten Gewichtsstufe (vierfach für den britischen Anteil) nach Canton, frankiert mit 1851/63, Johann 10 Ngr. blau im 5er-Streifen, 5 Ngr. zinnoberrot, 3 Ngr. auf gelb und 1 Ngr. auf rosa und zwei Werten Wappen 3 Pfg. grün, mit Nr. "3" und nebengesetztem DKr. "DRESDEN NEUST:BAHNHOF 5/III 60"; vorder- und rückseitig Transitstempel von Triest, Alexandria und Hongkong. Rückseitiger Portovermerk von Triest für "45" Nkr. Seeporto nach Alexandria und "2fl. 8 (nkr.)" Porto über Alexandria hinaus, letzteres auf der Vorderseite als "4/-" vermerkt. Die Frankatur teils mit kleinen Fehlern, die linke 10 Ngr. und die 5 Ngr. von senkrechten Bügen getroffen. Eine der höchsten Frankaturen Sachsens und in der Kombination mit dem 5er-Streifen der 10 Ngr. Marke und dem seltenen Bestimmungsort China ein einmaliges Stück der Sachsen-Philatelie und einer der eindrucksvollsten Übersee-Briefe der Altdeutschen Staaten.

SAXONY-DUTCH INDIES, 1864, Entire letter from "LEIPZIG DRESD:BAHNH. 24/III 64" to Batavia, Java, endorsed "Per Land Mail via Triest", fully prepaid and franked with 1855/63, Johann 10 ngr. blue and 1863/67, coat of arms ½ ngr. orange (slightly oxidized) and 2 copies 3 ngr. brown. On reverse Trieste handstamp "15/52", at Alexandria marked "1/-" in red crayon with adjacent red cds.; in Battavia  taxed with "25" cents for the conveyance beyond Singapore. A scarce and fine letter from the wellknown 'Schierbrand' correspondance

SAXONY - DUTCH INDIES: 1866, Envelope via Trieste to Soerabaya, fully prepaid and franked with 1863/67, coat of arms ½ neugroschen orange, 1 neugroschen rose and pair 5 neugroschen greyish blue, all tied by clear "11" with adjacent "ALTENBURG 15 SPT. 66". At Trieste marked "52" in red crayon on reverse, at Alexandria franked with GB 1 sh. green, cancelled with "B01", for the conveyance to Singapore, here taxed with another "25" dutch cents for the remaining trip with a dutch ship. A very fine, rare and extremely attractive entire from the well known correspondence to the pharmacist Steudemann.

"ALTENBURG 15 SPT. 66". In Triest rückseitig mit "52" in roter Kreide notiert, in Alexandria frankiert mit GB 1 Sh. grün, entwertet mit "B01", für die Beförderung nach Singapur und hier mit weiteren "25" holländischen Cent für den restlichen Weg mit holländischem Schiff taxiert. Ein sehr seltener, hochattraktiver und frischer Beleg aus der bekannten Korrespondenz an den Apotheker Steudemann.

THURN&TAXIS - DUTCH INDIES: 1859, lettersheet with part of contents (small part of side flap missing) from Kassel to Samarang on the island of Java, paid till Singapore and franked with 1852/59, 10 sgr. orange, 5 sgr. purple (both clear to large margins), 1 sgr. on grey-blue and ½ sgr. on grey-green, with numeral "14" and adjacent "CASSEL 20/10 1859"; transported via Trieste (25.10.), Alexandria (1.11.) and Singapore, here charged with additional "25" cents for the transport with dutch ships to Batavia. 1859, Briefhülle mit Teil des Inhalts (kleiner Teil der Seitenklappe fehlt) von Kassel nach Samarang auf der Insel Java, bezahlt bis Singapur und frankiert mit 1852/59, 10 Sgr. orange, 5 Sgr. violett (beide (noch) voll- bis breitrandig), 1 Sgr. auf graublau und ½ Sgr. auf graugrün, mit Nummer "14" und nebengesetztem "CASSEL 20/10 1859"; befördert über Triest (25.10.), Alexandria (1.11.) und Singapur, hier mit zusätzlichen "25" Cents für den Transport mit holländischen Schiffen nach Batavia belastet. Ein sehr schöner und seltener Brief. Signiert Haferkamp, Kruschel und Pfenninger, Zertifikat Sem BPP (2009)

WUERTTEMBERG - INDIA: 1860, part paid lettersheet to Tezpore, Assam, franked with 1859, 18 kr. blue, good margins with ca. 9mm sheet margin at left, in combination with 1857, 1 kr. brown in horizontal pair, tied by clear "SINDELFINGEN 19 MAI 1860"; travelled via Trieste (handstamp "15" on reverse), Alexandria (2.6.), Bombay(26.6.) and Calcutta (5.7.). The letter was paid till Alexandria, here charged with "1/-" for the remaining way, corresponding to Indian "St. Bg. As 8" to be paid by the recipient. A marvellous letter in very fine condition, especially considering the thin paper of the entire. Letters from Württemberg to India via Trieste are very rare. Certificate Irtenkauf BPP(1996)

1860, Briefhülle nach Tezpore, Assam, frankiert mit 1859, 18 Kr. blau, gut vollrandig mit ca. 9mm Bogenrand links, in Mischfrankatur mit 1857, 1 Kr. braun im waagerechten Paar, mit klarem "SINDELFINGEN 19 MAI 1860"; befördert über Triest (Handstempel "15" auf der Rückseite), Alexandria (2.6.), Bombay(26.6.) und Kalkutta (5.7.). Der Brief war bis Alexandria bezahlt, hier mit "1/-" für den restlichen Weg belastet, entsprechend indischer Taxstempel "St. Bg. As 8", die vom Empfänger zu zahlen waren. Ein prachtvoller Brief in sehr schöner einwandfreier Erhaltung, besonders in Anbetracht des dünnen Briefpapieres. Briefe von Württemberg nach Indien über Triest sind sehr selten. Light creasing and little unfresh, but still fine. a scarce destination.

1869, Briefhülle der bekannten Holstein-Korrespondenz nach Konstantinopel, frankiert mit 1868, ¼ Gr. lila im Paar, ½ Gr. orange und 2 Gr. blau, mit blauem "BERLIN POST-EXP.23 13/1 69"; der Auslandsanteil von "2" Gr. in blau vermerkt. Leichte Bugspuren und etwas unfrisch. Eine seltene Destination.

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - EGYPT: 1868, envelope from Dresden "via Trieste" to Cairo, franked with ¼ gr. violet and 5 gr. ocre, both with neat framed  "DRESDEN II. / 19 III 68"; at Alexandria additionally franked with Egypt 1867, 1 Piaster red, cancelled by single-circle "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 28 MARZ. 68" and forwarded to Cairo. The postage consists of 1 groschen German inland fee, 2 groschen for the sea postage from Trieste to Alexandria and 2¼ groschen for the internal Egyptian postage. Only during a short transitional period this fee was paid with a stamp and not settled interally. Only very few such combination covers are recorded. 1868, ¼ Groschen violett und 5 Groschen ockerbraun, beide mit sauberem sächsischem Rahmenstempel "DRESDEN II. / 19 III 68" auf Briefkuvert mit Leitvermerk "via Triest" nach Kairo. Der Brief wurde von Triest mit dem österreichischen Lloyd nach Alexandria befördert und dem österreichischem Postamt übergeben; hier frankiert mit Ägypten 1867, 1 Piaster rot und an die ägyptische Staatspost weitergeleitet. Von dieser die ägyptische Marke entwertet durch Einkreisstempel "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 28 MARZ. 68" und nach Kairo befördert. Das Porto setzt sich zusammen aus 1 Groschen deutscher Inlandsgebühr sowie 4¼ Groschen Weiterfranko, davon 2 Groschen für die Seepostbeförderung von Triest nach Alexandria sowie 2¼ Groschen für das  ägyptischen Porto; nur während einer kurzen Übergangsperiode wurde diese Gebühr als Marke verklebt und nicht anderweitig verrechnet. Es sind nur ganz wenige derartige Kombinationsbriefe bekannt. Atteste Spalink BPP (1992) und Holcombe (1992)

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - INDIA: 1868, part paid lettersheet to Ooty (Udhagamandalam), franked with 1868, 1 gr. rose and 2 gr. blue, tied by cds. "HOHENFELDE 22 1 68". The stamps paid the postage till Alexandria, here charged with "1/-" for the remaining way with corresponding Indian "St. Bg. As. 8". The envelope with small faults, the 2 gr. with crease. A very rare part paid letter, just 1 further letter recorded before the reduction of the British share to 6 pence on june 7th, 1868.

Der Brief war bis Alexandria bezahlt, hier taxiert mit "1/-" für den restlichen Weg mit entsprechendem indischen "St. Bg. As. 8". Der Umschlag mit kleinen Fehlern, die 2 Gr. mit Bug. Ein sehr seltener Teilfranko-Brief; es ist nur ein weiterer vor der Senkung des britischen Anteils auf 6 Pence am 7. Juni 1868 registriert .

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - JAPAN: 1871, lettersheet "via Trieste" to Yokohama, franked with 1869, 4 singles 2 gr. ultramarine, tied by cds.  "BREMERHAVEN 13 12 70" ; on reverse transit mark of Hong Kong and arrival mark of the British PO. A fantastically fresh letter with 1 groschen Union postage and 7 Groschen onward postage. Covers to Japan from this early period are great rarities.

Briefe nach Japan aus dieser frühen Zeit sind große Seltenheiten

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION-NEW ZEALAND, 1868, Envelope from "SOMMERSTEDT 5 7 68" via Trieste and Alexandria to Nelson on the southern Island of New Zealand, prepaid with 3 copies 1868, 5 groschen ocre and single ½ groschen orange; on reverse transit- and arrival marks of Woyens, Trieste, Nelson and Westport. Postal notations in blue and red crayon somewhat faded, fine and fresh cover for this destination.The old 15½ groschen rate via Trieste was reduced 1.1.1868 to 13½ groschen, but all recorded letters coming from the OPD Kiel are franked with the old rate, which seems to have remained for the former duchies of Schleswig-Holstein. A fine and extremely rare letter. Signed Pfenninger.

1868, Briefkuvert von "SOMMERSTEDT 5 7 68" über Triest und Alexandria nach Nelson auf der Südinsel Neuseelands. Der Brief ist frankiert mit 1868, ½ Groschen orange und drei Werten 5 Groschen ocker; rückseitig Durchgangs- und Ankunftsstempel von Woyens, Triest, Nelson und Westport. Taxvermerke mit rotem und blauem Kreidestift etwas verblasst, sonst gute und für diese Destination frische Erhaltung. Der alte Tarif von 15½ Groschen via Triest wurde am 1.1.1868 auf 13½ Groschen gesenkt, aber alle bekannten Briefe aus der OPD Kiel sind nach dem alten Tarif frankiert, der für die ehemaligen Herzogtümer Schleswig-Holsteins anscheinend beibehalten wurde.
