1848, CAMBRIA: Folded letter Franklin 5C., fresh color and good margins all around, used with pen-strike and two strikes of red "PAID" and adjacent cds. "THEO-SEMINARY MAY 8, addressed to Norfolk, ocean transit unpaid, charged "1/-" upon arrival, adhesive two small tears, otherwise fine and attractive, signed Toaspern and certificate PF (1976)

1855, ATLANTIC: Franklin 1c. blue and horizontal pair Washington 10c. green tied by grid to folded letter with adjacent cds. "NEW ORLEANS OCT 21" via "NEW YORK OCT 31" to Marseille, upon arrival first charged with "8" decimes, this corrected to "16" for a double letter, 1c. touched, otherwise fine

1856, FULTON: Maiden Voyage, 1851 Franklin 1c. blue, horizontal pair, tied by cds. "NEW ORLEANS FEB 3" to printed matter to Augsburg, Bavaria. Upon arrival charged with "7" kreuzer, stamps cut into, slightly toned, otherwise fine and scarce entire

1860, ILLINOIS: 1857 Washington 3c. red and 12c. black as horizontal pair tied by cds. "AUGUSTA JUL 7" to envelope via Bremen or Hamburg to Geneva, Switzerland.  With red integral cds. "NEW YORK PAID AUG 11 9", put on "Illinois" as "Saxonia", the HAPAG liner would not sail for another four days, the rate was 21 cents, the US post office kept the balance of 6 cents, adhesives with negligible imperfections, othewise fine

1861, ARAGO: 1857 Washington 3c. red and Franklin 30c. orange tied by red grid to folded letter from "NEW YORK FEB 3" endorsed "pr. Steamer Arago via Marseille" to Melbourne, Australia, the adhesives only paid the route via Southampton, so the cover was put on the "PERSIA", from there on the "PERA" to Alexandria, "SIMLA" to Galle and "BENARES" to Melbourne with arrival mark "MELBOURNE AP 15 61", fine and very attractive

1867, ARAGO: 1861 Lincoln 15c. black and Franklin 30c. orange tied by cork cancel to overpaid folded letter from New York to Aachen, Prussia with red integral cds. "N. YORK Am. PKT. AUG 4 7 PAID" crediting Prussia, stamps some faults, otherwise fine entire from the penultimate voyage before closing of the line

1867, GUIDING STAR: Lincoln 15c. black tied by grid to small envelope with adjacent cds. "GUILDFORD MAY 24" to Paris, attractive entire conveyed during the 2nd of only three voyages of this joint venture with New York Mail S.S. Co.

1860, EDINBURGH: Washington 10c. vertical strip of three and single 12c. black, each cancelled in manuscript with "X", matching "Paid 42d" rating and left and cds. "GALVA JUL 10 1860" on envelope to Hudikswall, Sweden. Red New York exchange mark on reverse with matching red "19" credit handstamp on front, red "AACHEN FRANCO" and manuscript "f5" sgr. rating and two "HELSINGBORG 28 7 1860" struck, minor restoration top 10c. adhesives pulled perf, otherwise a very fine usage

1862, CITY OF WASHINGTON: 3c. rose and 30c. orange, each as horizontal pair, fresh and bright colours, tied by three clear strikes of Boston large "PAID" grid cancel to folded lettersheet endorsed "via England p City of Washington" to Port-Elizabeth, red crayon "12" credit marking and red "LONDON E.C. "CHICAGO JUL 30 1862" to envelope to Brussels, franked with 21 cents, the rate by American Packet to Belgium via British open mail, the post office did not recognize that this rate had been superseded 18 month earlier, charged with "2" decimes due, backflap missing, short and/or toned perfs, still and attractive entire

1862, NORTH AMERICAN: Patriotic cover ""Union" with Tree of Flags," franked with Washington 24c. brown-lilac tied cds. cds. "HANCOCK JUN 15" to Manchester, with red integral cds. 1864, UNKNOWN VESSEL: Confederacy, Blockade-Run from Fort Pemperton via "BAHAMAS AU 3 1864" and Halifax and put on Cunards "ASIA" to Liverpool, blue crayon charge  "1(sh)/5(d)" plus "7"(d) manuscript rate totaled in "2" thus handstamp "2/-" struck,  smaller repairs to the cover, still and attractive and scarce entire from the famous Burckmyer correspondence

1858, NIAGARA: Washington 12c. black, horizontal strip of four, a pair and two singles tied by red grid to cover front to Liverpool with red "76" cents manuscript mark and arrival "AMERICA PAID LIVERPOOL SO 4 58", adhesives some faults, one stamp with vertical paper breaks due to fold, despite faults an attractive and scarce franking

1859, EUROPA: Jefferson 5c. brown and Washington 10c. green, each as vertical strip of three tied by cds. "NEW ORLEANS OCT 24" to triple weight folded lettersheet to Paris with red integral "NEW YORK PAID NOV 1 36" alongside, adhesives some short/missing perfs, still fine appearing and an impressive triple-rate franking

PKT JAN 27 PAID 19" and "PAID LIVERPOOL BR. PAKET" alongside, 2c. adhesives some blunted perfs due to being applied over edge, otherwise fine

1865, AFRICA: Franklin 1c. blue horizontal pair and two horizontal pairs Washington 10c. green tied by circle of wedges to folded letter to Neuchatel, Switzerland, red "NEW YORK PAID 36" and british transit marks alongside, few slightly blunt perfs and one stamp 10c. toned perf, otherwise fine

1866, CHINA: Lincoln 15c. black and Franklin 30c. orange tied by grid to envelope with cds. "SALEM NOV 6" alongside to Zanzibar, endorsed "via Marseilles" and "care Adumally Sultanally, Esq., Merchant, Bombay", red "BOSTON BR. PKT. 7 NOV 40" credit handstamp and crayon "1" British colonial credit alongside, reverse with transit "BOMBAY DE 24", a fine and scarce entire. Albert P. Goodhue, the recipient of this cover, was a ship chandler and businessman from Salem, Massachusetts, who likely had a connection to Benjamin Goodhue, a commercial merchant and politician from the same area. Benjamin served in the state senate and later as a representative in the first U.S. congress, and played a significant role in shaping the country's revenue laws. His son, Jonathan, was also a successful commercial merchant.
