1874, entire folded letter dated "Pto. Plata 23 Octubre 1874" and endorsed "pr Metropolis" sent to New York, upon arrival cds. "NEW YORK U.S. CURRENCY DUE 20 NOV 5" struck alongside, a fine and interesting entire The ship Metropolis had an engine failure after its stopover in Haiti on 27.10. and therefore arrived in New York only after 13 instead of 9 days.

1875, Second printing 10c. black on green-blue and yellow, right marginal, tied by red oval agents cachet "G. Keitel & Cie, Port au Prince" to cover front endorsed "par Steamer Allemand" to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. There two-line "Affranchissement Obligatoire" and boxed "RETOUR" applied, a very fine and interesting cover front, certificate Nielsen (1997) (Facit HP2) The Dominican Republic did not recognize the HAPAG stamp as having any franking power and returned the cover for "real" postage.  Provenance: Private Ship Letter Stamp Issuing Companies up to 1900 – The Jan Berg Collection (373. "NEW YORK SHIP LETTER AUG 15 *5*" struck alongside, a scarce and interesting entire with interesting content "..Revolutionary troops have occupied the city for 14 days, connections to the interior are interrupted...

1878, envelope with original contents written on board of the USS Ewatara, Samana Bay Feb 1st 1878 and addressed to ​Dubuque, Iowa, franked with horizontal pair US Washington 3c. green upon arrival in Key West arrival mark struck and handed over to US Post, a little roughly opened, otherwise fine, with interesting content reading: "My Dear Darling, still further complications have arisen in mail transportation, so that we really do not know when or how we will be able to send you letters.....This letter I am writing to send by a schoner that arrived a day or so ago and will probably leave tomorrow for Pensacola, Florida."
