S.C. THWING : "FORWARDED BY S.C. THWING & Co BOSTON", on folded lettersheet to London, some minor ageing, otherwise fine

1841 (19 July), folded letter from Lynchburg via "PHILADELPHIA JUL 28" with matching boxed "PAID" alongside, endorsed "per Steamer Caledonia" to New Port, Isle of Wight, charged with handstamp "1/-", fine. Interesting content, with full transcript, with a long discussion about slavery "...I am in hopes that the Abolitionists will let us alone...the master is the greatest slave".

1848, folded lettersheet from "BOSTON SEP 11" with matching red "PAID" and red "29" alongside, endorsed "pr Niagara" to Annan, with arrival and "1/-" retaliatory due rating, forwarded to Glasgow and franked with 1841 1p. red, tied by blueish numeral, touched, attractive Retaliatory period cover

1857, Washington 3c. block of four and horizontal pair with manuscript "Kittle Creek 14 July 57" on postal stationery envelope 3c. buff to Colne with "19" credit handstamp, carried on the "Asia" to Liverpool, no atttempt to collect to deficiency of 3c., same apparant imperfections, still attractive and scarce

1859, Victoria 12½c. blueish-green with pen-stroke on mourning cover with adjacent cds. "WILLIAM-HENRY 7 DE 1859" to London, carried on the "Europa" from Boston to Queenstown, so straight-line "MORE TO PAY." struck with handstamp "2" due alongside, stamp with corner fault,  otherwise fine and attractive

1869 (16 Jun), Pictorial 12c. green, good color tied by neat strike of fancy cancel Outline 5-Poin Star with adjacent cds. "NEW HAMBURGH JUN 16" to mourning cover with red cds. "NEW YORK PAID ALL JUN 17", carried by the "Palmyra", to Brighton, a very fine and attractive cover showing the "Adriatic" with a fancy cancellation, certificate PF (1997)

1869 (24 Dec), Pictorials 3c. blue horizontal strip of four with pen strokes on cover with manuscript despatch "Tebeauville Dec 24" to Colne, via New York and carried by the "Russia" to Queentown, possible the cover stayed on board until she arrived in Liverpool, because the receiver cds. shows "COLNE JA 8 70", adhesive some minor imperfections, very attractive

1875, Lincoln 3c. green, two singles tied by New York fancy to envelope, prepaying the 6 cent under ½ ounce rate, to London. Determined to be over ½ ounce subsequently two line "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID" and "6." applied, that being twice the deficieny,

1858, Washington 10c. black, block of four and horizontal pair tied by cds. "Oconomowoc Wis. Dec 6" to large-size cover to Worcester, with "NEW YORK AM. PACKET DEC 11" cds. and matching framed "Short Paid" with blue crayon "96" due rating, carried by "Arago" from New York to Southampton with "4/-" quadruple packet rating, one stamp in block creased, left stamp of pair faulty, otherwise fine and an extremely rare use of 1857 Issue 12c. as block of four, Ashbrook certificate (1954)

The 72c paid in adhesives was the attempt to prepay triple the 24c rate, but the U.S.-British treaty required four-times for letters weighing over 1½ ounces. It is therefore rated "short paid" and due 96c without any credit for prepayment.
