1859: Second opium war: 1856, 6 d. pale lilac, used on cover endorsed 'via Southampton' to Canton, China addressed to Lieut. Pollard on the 'H.M. Gunboat Staunch', neatly tied by 'Plymouth / 620' duplex (April 4). Reverse with 'Stonehouse' undated circular cancellation in blue and London cds of transit in red. A fine and attractive cover. HMS Staunch was an Albacore-class wooden screw gunboat launched in 1856.
