1 shilling dull violet, horizontal pair and single with diagonal bi-sect or tri-sect 3 d. dull red, tied by grill "4" to envelope from "BATHURST NO 14 1859" via London and Panama to Callao, Peru; franking with mostly good margins, touched in places, shilling-values small marginal tears and the bi-sect with crease; the cover restored and pressed. A very rare franking and the only known cover from New Brunswick to South America, also the only recorded use of a 1 shilling pair on cover; certificate BPA (1999). Note: It is believed that the sender intended to use the 3 d. as a tri-sect to make up the 36½ d. rate with 37 d. franking as the closest possible way to fulfill this rate; assuming the 3 d. was bi-sected, the overpayment would be 1 d. Provenance: John F. Seybold, Syracuse (1910) Nicholas Argenti (1963) 'Foxbridge' Collection (John du Pont, 1989) Koh Seow Chuan (1999) Warren Wilkinson (2011) Joseph Hackmey
