1836, Auburn, Cayuga County to Albany, June 28 : folded letter written in Auburn and mailed at Homer, New York, bearing clear circular HOMER N.Y. JUN 28 datestamp with matching straightline PAID handstamp and manuscript rate 12½, representing the correct 80–150 mile distance rate under the 1835 postal tariff. Addressed to Azariah Flagg, prominent New York State official, the fully written letter discusses a contested land title claim before the Commissioners of the New York State Land Office, referencing legal proceedings and attorneys engaged in the matter, a fine example of early New York governmental and legal correspondence. Well preserved with strong postal markings and legible contents; an attractive and desirable example of 1830s New York stampless postal history combining correct rate usage with significant administrative content, usual file folds, otherwise very fine.
