The letter weighed more than ½oz and was rated as double, with black integral cds. "N. YORK AM. Pkt 46 OCT 14", carried by the "Atlantic" from New York to Liverpool, charged with "26" sgr. to the recipient, interesting cover with attempted part-payment
 

1855 (Jan 10), Washington 12c. vertical pair with lower sheet margin with grid cancel in envelope with adjacent integral cds. "NEW YORK 3 JAN 10", carried by the "Atlantic", to Dublin, Ireland. the pair touched at left, some toning at bottom of cover, still attractive usage

Interesting content, with full transcript, with a long discussion about slavery "...I am in hopes that the Abolitionists will let us alone...the master is the greatest slave".

1848, quadruple-rate folded letter from "MANCHESTER JU 30 1848" endorsed "pr. Niagara Steamer" to Boston with "4/-" rate manuscript alongside, carried on Cunard's "Niagara" to Boston, upon arrival charged with "72" cent retaliatory rate., small tear at top otherwise very fine and rare. The British rate structure didn't allow for a triple rate, moving from a double rate of 2/ for between half and one ounce to a quadruple rate of 4/ for over one ounce but not over 2 ounces were collected from the writer, the U.S. progression was per half ounce allowing for a triple rate, thus 72c at 24c per half ounce retaliatory for up to 1½ ounces was collected from the addressee. Multiple rate retaliatory rate covers are rare as are covers illustrating the disparity in rate progression between the two countries. 

1848, folded lettersheet from "GLASGOW SEP 21 1848" written by James Maguire if Company K, 7th Infantry addressed to the Adjutant General's Office, War Department in Washington with "1/-" manuscript rating alongside, conveyed by "Cambria" to Boston with red "BOSTON SHIP..." and matching retaliatory "34" rating handstamp, this crossed out as cover addressed to U.S. Goverment Office, small faults, but an attractive and rare transatlantic free retaliatory use

1848, folded letter from "BALTIMORE JUL 25" with  matching blue "PAID" and "34" manuscript rating to Cognac, originally intended for shipment by "Niagara", but since the arrival in Boston was too late sent via New York with the "Hibernia", fine and scarce retaliatory rate cover from Baltimore
