SAXONY-DUTCH INDIES, 1864, Entire letter from "LEIPZIG DRESD:BAHNH. 24/III 64" to Batavia, Java, endorsed "Per Land Mail via Triest", fully prepaid and franked with 1855/63, Johann 10 ngr. blue and 1863/67, coat of arms ½ ngr. orange (slightly oxidized) and 2 copies 3 ngr. brown. On reverse Trieste handstamp "15/52", at Alexandria marked "1/-" in red crayon with adjacent red cds.; in Battavia  taxed with "25" cents for the conveyance beyond Singapore. A scarce and fine letter from the wellknown 'Schierbrand' correspondance

SAXONY - DUTCH INDIES: 1866, Envelope via Trieste to Soerabaya, fully prepaid and franked with 1863/67, coat of arms ½ neugroschen orange, 1 neugroschen rose and pair 5 neugroschen greyish blue, all tied by clear "11" with adjacent "ALTENBURG 15 SPT. 66". At Trieste marked "52" in red crayon on reverse, at Alexandria franked with GB 1 sh. green, cancelled with "B01", for the conveyance to Singapore, here taxed with another "25" dutch cents for the remaining trip with a dutch ship. A very fine, rare and extremely attractive entire from the well known correspondence to the pharmacist Steudemann.

1866, Briefumschlag über Triest nach Soerabaya, voll frankiert mit 1863/67, Wappen ½ Neugroschen orange 1 Neugroschen rosa und Paar 5 Neugroschen graublau, alles mit klaren "11" mit nebengesetztem DKr. "ALTENBURG 15 SPT. 66". In Triest rückseitig mit "52" in roter Kreide notiert, in Alexandria frankiert mit GB 1 Sh. grün, entwertet mit "B01", für die Beförderung nach Singapur und hier mit weiteren "25" holländischen Cent für den restlichen Weg mit holländischem Schiff taxiert. Ein sehr seltener, hochattraktiver und frischer Beleg aus der bekannten Korrespondenz an den Apotheker Steudemann.

THURN&TAXIS - EGYPT: 1866, postal stationery envelope 2 kr. yellow with 1859/61, 15 kr. purple (full to large margins) and 1865, 3 kr. rose, rouletted, with numeral "220" and adjacent "FRANKFURT A.M. 16/4" via Trieste to Alexandria with arrival mark of the Austrian PO; very fine cover from the well-known Kalb correspondence.

1866, Ganzsachenumschlag 2 Kr. gelb mit 1859/61, 15 Kr. violett (voll bis breitrandig) und 1865, 3 kr. rosa, farblos durchstochen, mit Nr. THURN&TAXIS - DUTCH INDIES: 1859, lettersheet with part of contents (small part of side flap missing) from Kassel to Samarang on the island of Java, paid till Singapore and franked with 1852/59, 10 sgr. orange, 5 sgr. purple (both clear to large margins), 1 sgr. on grey-blue and ½ sgr. on grey-green, with numeral "14" and adjacent "CASSEL 20/10 1859"; transported via Trieste (25.10.), Alexandria (1.11.) and Singapore, here charged with additional "25" cents for the transport with dutch ships to Batavia. WUERTTEMBERG - INDIA: 1860, part paid lettersheet to Tezpore, Assam, franked with 1859, 18 kr. blue, good margins with ca. 9mm sheet margin at left, in combination with 1857, 1 kr. brown in horizontal pair, tied by clear "SINDELFINGEN 19 MAI 1860"; travelled via Trieste (handstamp "15" on reverse), Alexandria (2.6.), Bombay(26.6.) and Calcutta (5.7.). The letter was paid till Alexandria, here charged with "1/-" for the remaining way, corresponding to Indian "St. Bg. As 8" to be paid by the recipient. A marvellous letter in very fine condition, especially considering the thin paper of the entire. Letters from Württemberg to India via Trieste are very rare. Certificate Irtenkauf BPP(1996)

1860, Briefhülle nach Tezpore, Assam, frankiert mit 1859, 18 Kr. blau, gut vollrandig mit ca. 9mm Bogenrand links, in Mischfrankatur mit 1857, 1 Kr. braun im waagerechten Paar, mit klarem "SINDELFINGEN 19 MAI 1860"; befördert über Triest (Handstempel "15" auf der Rückseite), Alexandria (2.6.), Bombay(26.6.) und Kalkutta (5.7.). Der Brief war bis Alexandria bezahlt, hier mit "1/-" für den restlichen Weg belastet, entsprechend indischer Taxstempel "St. Bg. As 8", die vom Empfänger zu zahlen waren. Ein prachtvoller Brief in sehr schöner einwandfreier Erhaltung, besonders in Anbetracht des dünnen Briefpapieres. Briefe von Württemberg nach Indien über Triest sind sehr selten. NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - TURKISH EMPIRE: 1869, lettersheet from the well-known 'Holstein'-correspondance to Constantinople, franked with 1868, ¼ gr. lilac in pair, ½ gr. orange and 2 gr. blue, all tied by blue "BERLIN POST-EXP.23  13/1 69", the foreign share of "2" gr. noted in blue crayon. Light creasing and little unfresh, but still fine. a scarce destination.

1869, Briefhülle der bekannten Holstein-Korrespondenz nach Konstantinopel, frankiert mit 1868, ¼ Gr. lila im Paar, ½ Gr. orange und 2 Gr. blau, mit blauem "BERLIN POST-EXP.23 13/1 69"; der Auslandsanteil von "2" Gr. in blau vermerkt. Leichte Bugspuren und etwas unfrisch. Eine seltene Destination.

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - EGYPT: 1868, envelope from Dresden "via Trieste" to Cairo, franked with ¼ gr. violet and 5 gr. ocre, both with neat framed  "DRESDEN II. / 19 III 68"; at Alexandria additionally franked with Egypt 1867, 1 Piaster red, cancelled by single-circle "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 28 MARZ. 68" and forwarded to Cairo. The postage consists of 1 groschen German inland fee, 2 groschen for the sea postage from Trieste to Alexandria and 2¼ groschen for the internal Egyptian postage. Only during a short transitional period this fee was paid with a stamp and not settled interally. Only very few such combination covers are recorded. 1868, ¼ Groschen violett und 5 Groschen ockerbraun, beide mit sauberem sächsischem Rahmenstempel "DRESDEN II. / 19 III 68" auf Briefkuvert mit Leitvermerk "via Triest" nach Kairo. Der Brief wurde von Triest mit dem österreichischen Lloyd nach Alexandria befördert und dem österreichischem Postamt übergeben; hier frankiert mit Ägypten 1867, 1 Piaster rot und an die ägyptische Staatspost weitergeleitet. Von dieser die ägyptische Marke entwertet durch Einkreisstempel "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 28 MARZ. 68" und nach Kairo befördert. Das Porto setzt sich zusammen aus 1 Groschen deutscher Inlandsgebühr sowie 4¼ Groschen Weiterfranko, davon 2 Groschen für die Seepostbeförderung von Triest nach Alexandria sowie 2¼ Groschen für das  ägyptischen Porto; nur während einer kurzen Übergangsperiode wurde diese Gebühr als Marke verklebt und nicht anderweitig verrechnet. Es sind nur ganz wenige derartige Kombinationsbriefe bekannt. Atteste Spalink BPP (1992) und Holcombe (1992)

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - INDIA: 1868, part paid lettersheet to Ooty (Udhagamandalam), franked with 1868, 1 gr. rose and 2 gr. blue, tied by cds. "HOHENFELDE 22 1 68". The stamps paid the postage till Alexandria, here charged with "1/-" for the remaining way with corresponding Indian "St. Bg. As. 8". The envelope with small faults, the 2 gr. with crease. A very rare part paid letter, just 1 further letter recorded before the reduction of the British share to 6 pence on june 7th, 1868.

Ein sehr seltener Teilfranko-Brief; es ist nur ein weiterer vor der Senkung des britischen Anteils auf 6 Pence am 7. Juni 1868 registriert .

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - JAPAN: 1871, lettersheet "via Trieste" to Yokohama, franked with 1869, 4 singles 2 gr. ultramarine, tied by cds.  "BREMERHAVEN 13 12 70" ; on reverse transit mark of Hong Kong and arrival mark of the British PO. A fantastically fresh letter with 1 groschen Union postage and 7 Groschen onward postage. Covers to Japan from this early period are great rarities.

"BREMERHAVEN 13 12 70" ;rückseitig Transitstempel von Hongkong und Ankunftsstempel des britischen Postamtes. Ein fantastisch frischer Brief mit 1 Groschen Vereinsporto und 7 Groschen Weiterfranko. Briefe nach Japan aus dieser frühen Zeit sind große Seltenheiten

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION-NEW ZEALAND, 1868, Envelope from "SOMMERSTEDT 5 7 68" via Trieste and Alexandria to Nelson on the southern Island of New Zealand, prepaid with 3 copies 1868, 5 groschen ocre and single ½ groschen orange; on reverse transit- and arrival marks of Woyens, Trieste, Nelson and Westport. Postal notations in blue and red crayon somewhat faded, fine and fresh cover for this destination.The old 15½ groschen rate via Trieste was reduced 1.1.1868 to 13½ groschen, but all recorded letters coming from the OPD Kiel are franked with the old rate, which seems to have remained for the former duchies of Schleswig-Holstein. A fine and extremely rare letter. Signed Pfenninger.

1868, Briefkuvert von "SOMMERSTEDT 5 7 68" über Triest und Alexandria nach Nelson auf der Südinsel Neuseelands. Der Brief ist frankiert mit 1868, ½ Groschen orange und drei Werten 5 Groschen ocker; rückseitig Durchgangs- und Ankunftsstempel von Woyens, Triest, Nelson und Westport. Taxvermerke mit rotem und blauem Kreidestift etwas verblasst, sonst gute und für diese Destination frische Erhaltung. Der alte Tarif von 15½ Groschen via Triest wurde am 1.1.1868 auf 13½ Groschen gesenkt, aber alle bekannten Briefe aus der OPD Kiel sind nach dem alten Tarif frankiert, der für die ehemaligen Herzogtümer Schleswig-Holsteins anscheinend beibehalten wurde. GREAT BRITAIN - IONIAN ISLANDS, 1851, letter sheet from London (9.1.) to Corfu, franked with embossed issued 1 shilling green, cut to shape, and 1841, 1 d. red-brown in strip of 3, cut in at left, otherwise good to large margins, tied by numeral "1" with adjacent "ANGL. CALAIS" and rare blue Corfu tax mark "d/5/3/8". On reverse transit marks of Feldkirch, Verona and Trieste and arrival mark (24.1.). The strip 1 d. with crease at left, where originally applied around the edge of the cover, otherwise fine. A very scarce and unusual entire. (SG 54/55,8/9)

GREAT BRITAIN (IRELAND) - IONIAN ISLANDS, 1855, cover from "STROKESTOWN NO 26 1855" to Corfu, franked with embossed issued 1 shilling green, cut into at top, otherwise good margins, tied by numeral "417" with adjacent red "AUS ENGLAND PER AACHEN FRANCO" and Corfu arrival mark. In Germany marked with "3¼" silbergroschen for the conveyance from Trieste to Corfu. A fine letter with scarce destination.(SG 54/55)

GREAT BRITAIN - TURKISK EMPIRE: 1857, registered lettersheet from Manchester via Aachen and Trieste to Constantinople, franked with 1855/57, 2 copies 1 d. pale rose (emergency printing May/June 1857), 2 d. blue, 6 d. pale lilac and 1 sh. green, tied by barred "498"; several register marks including boxed "TRIEST Recommandirt" on reverse. The postage consists of 3 sgr. each British and German postage, 1 sgr. Belgian transit, 4¼ sgr. postage beyond Trieste and 5 sgr. British- and 2 sgr. German registration fee (total 18¼ sgr. = 1sh. 10 pence). Stamps with some mostly unobtrusive faults, still fine and very attractive. PAPAL STATES - TRIESTE: 1869, large size quintuple rate registered envelope from Rome to the Russian consul at Trieste, franked with 6 copies 1867, 80 cmi. on vivid rose and 1868, 10 cmi. on orange, 20 cmi. on red and 40 cmi. on yellow, all tied by grid with adjacent "DIRECTIONE DI ROMA 20 GEN. 69" and french transit mark; on reverse rare oval "RECOMMANDIRT TRIEST 26/4 1869". An outstanding cover with a rare and most attractive 4 colour- 550 cmi.-franking. Certificate Colla (2013) (Sassone 20a+26a,27,29)

PAPAL STATES - TURKISH EMPIRE, 1855, Entire letter from Ancona to Constantinople, entirely prepaid with 1852, 3 bajocchi on brownish and 2 copies 7 bajocchi on blue, tied by cds. "ANCONA 2 AGO. 55" with adjacent blue oval "AGENZIA DEL LLOYD AUSTRIACO Ancona"; on reverse rated in red crayon "9" and "8" for the Papal States- and sea postage. Desinfection slits and little unfresh, old fashioned price sticker at upper left. A still fine entire with scarce destination.

PAPAL STATES - AUSTRIA (HUNGARY): 1868, entire letter from Rome to Pest, franked with 1867, 5 cmi. on blue green and 40 cmi. on yellow and 1868, 10 cmi. on orange, tied by diamont of dots with adjacent "ROMA 18 GIU. 68" and french transit mark. The letter was endorsed "Via Triest" but forwarded via France, which was the most common route at that time. A fine entire, singned Emilio Diena.

ITALY - TURKISH EMPIRE (ALBANIA), 1871, Lettersheet from Venice via Trieste and Antivari to Scutari, franked for the distance to Antivari with  1863, 60 cmi. lilac, tied by dotted "196", in Antivari franked for the remaining way with Turkey 1869, 10 paras lilac and postage due 2 pia. with blue all Arabic double circle. The 2 pia. slightly affected by horizontal cover crease, still fine and scarce.
 

NETHERLANDS - GREECE: 1853, unpaid entire letter from Amsterdam via Prussia and Trieste to Athens, taxed with a total of "140" lepta to be paid by receipient, which included 6 kreuzer dutch postage, 9 kreuzer German Postal Union share and 9 kreuzer sea postage. Several transit- and arrival marks on reverse. Certificate Puschmann (2003)

NETHERLANDS - HOLY LAND: 1868, small envelope from "UTRECHT 14 MRT 68" to Jerusalem, bearing 1867-69 King William 10c. lake and 20c. green, tied by framed "franco", paying the single letter rate. On front of the envelope shows manuscript "wf2" sgr. credit to Prussia in blue and red "4" kr. credit to Austria, on reverse framed "EMMERICH/OBERHAUSEN", oval "TRIEST" and "GERUSALEMME /4/4" arrival mark of the Austrian PO. The adhesives with slight marginal staining and 20 c. rounded corner at lower right, otherwise fine. A very rare item; the only recorded letter from the Netherlands via Trieste to the Holy Land.

NETHERLANDS - DUTCH INDIES: 1871, double rate letter from "ROTTERDAM 3 JUL 71", endorsed "via Triest" to Padang with arrival mark (19.8.) on reverse, franked with 2 copies each 1867, 50 c. gold (small corner crease resp. paper break) and 5 c. blue. Despite the faults an attractive and scarce entire; just 5 % of the mail from the Netherlands to it's colonies in Asia were transported via Triest.

PORTUGAL - TURKISH EMPIRE: 1865, lettersheet from Lisbon to Smyrna, franked with 1862/64, 5, 10, 25 and 100 (2) reis, tied by numeral "1" with adjacent "LISBOA 19/8 65" and boxed "P.D."; on reverse transit marks of railway "VERVIERS/COELN" and Trieste and arrival mark of the Austrian PO. Two stamps cut into, otherwise mostly ample to good margins. An attractive and rare 4-colour franking; the only recorded letter from Portugal via Trieste to Turkey. SWITZERLAND - JAPAN: 1870, entire letter to Yokohama, franked with 1862/81, 5 c. ocre, 20 c. orange and 30 c. light ultramarine in strip of 3, cancelled by straight line "NEUKIRCH a/Th" and additionally tied by cds "BÜRGLEN 5 JUNI 70". The letter is endorsed "Via Triest&Suez", on reverse transit marks of Vienna and Hongkong and arrival mark of the British PO. The left stamp of the strip lightly affected by horizontal cover crease, the 20 c. missing corner perf at lower right, otherwise very fine and fresh, especially for this exotic destination. Die linke Marke des Streifens leicht durch waagerechten Briefbug beeinträchtigt, die 20 C. rechts unten eckrund, sonst sehr schöne und frische Erhaltung, besonders für diese exotische Destination. UNITED STATES - GREECE: 1860, envelope from New York to Athens, franked with 1857/61, 1 c. blue as 'Carrier fee', tied by "23 NEW YOR AM. PKT. OCT. 29"; endorsed "Via England" but transported via Prussia and Trieste with red "Aachen 3 12" on reverse next to arrival mark (in mistake 3.11., Julian calendar). On front noted in blue crayon "55 10 15" neukreuzer for the conveyance from New York to the Greek harbour and in red crayon the total due of "255" lepta to be paid by the recipient. A very fine and most likely unique part paid letter to Greece. Signed Holcombe and Todd

UNITED STATES - TURKISH EMPIRE: 1870, cover from Middleborough, Mass. to Constantinople, franked with 1869, pictorial issue 15 c. type II ; adjacent "NEW YORK NOV. 5"; on reverse arrival mark "NORDDEUTSCHE POST-AGENTUR....." which was in use only from march 1870 till may 1871. A fine and scarce  entire from the well known Washburn correspondence. (Scott 119)

UNITED STATES - EGYPT: 1860, envelope with imprint "U.S. Customs House, New Orleans. Collector's Office. Official Business" and endorsed "George S. Denison Spe. agt. & act. Coll. of Customs" to the Consul general at Alexandria, franked with 1861/67, 3 c. rose in block of 15, tied by "New Orleans La. Dec. 9, 1864" cds. and additional target cancels. The franking covered the rate via great Britain, but the letter was forwarded via Aachen (29.1.) and Trieste (1.1.), arrival mark of the Austrian PO (11.1.). Very Fine and highly exhibitable. UNITED STATES - CHINA: 1858, part paid lettersheet from "PROVIDENCE R.I. FEB. 23 1858" via Prussia, Trieste and Alexandria to Hongkong. Prepaid with 38 cents till Alexandria and taxed here with "1/-" for the conveyance to Hongkong, to be paid by the recipient. Just 5 letters from The US via Trieste to China have been recorded.

IONIAN ISLANDS-AUSTRIA, 1841, prepaid entire letter from Zante to Trieste with fancy "ZANTE 27 APRILE 1841" on reverse and "CORFU 29 APRILE 1841" on front; unusual rating in red crayon on front, "18" kreuzer prepayment noted on reverse. Entire with desinfection slits, very fine.

IONIAN ISLANDS-AUSTRIA, 1859, Entire prepaid letter from "ITAKA 16 JUNE (5)9" to Triest, as usual franked in transit (the little town had not yet been supplied with stamps) with 1859, 1 d. blue for the internal Ionian postage, tied by fancy "KEFALONIA 1859 JUNE 17" with adjacent matching blue boxed "FRANCA"; on reverse manuscript "15" (new kreuzer) in red crayon indicating the paid sea postage to Trieste; arrival mark of June 22nd.
