SAXONY-DUTCH INDIES, 1864, Entire letter from "LEIPZIG DRESD:BAHNH. 24/III 64" to Batavia, Java, endorsed "Per Land Mail via Triest", fully prepaid and franked with 1855/63, Johann 10 ngr. blue and 1863/67, coat of arms ½ ngr. orange (slightly oxidized) and 2 copies 3 ngr. brown. On reverse Trieste handstamp "15/52", at Alexandria marked "1/-" in red crayon with adjacent red cds.; in Battavia  taxed with "25" cents for the conveyance beyond Singapore. A scarce and fine letter from the wellknown 'Schierbrand' correspondance

SAXONY - DUTCH INDIES: 1866, Envelope via Trieste to Soerabaya, fully prepaid and franked with 1863/67, coat of arms ½ neugroschen orange, 1 neugroschen rose and pair 5 neugroschen greyish blue, all tied by clear "11" with adjacent "ALTENBURG 15 SPT. 66". At Trieste marked "52" in red crayon on reverse, at Alexandria franked with GB 1 sh. green, cancelled with "B01", for the conveyance to Singapore, here taxed with another "25" dutch cents for the remaining trip with a dutch ship. A very fine, rare and extremely attractive entire from the well known correspondence to the pharmacist Steudemann.

1866, Briefumschlag über Triest nach Soerabaya, voll frankiert mit 1863/67, Wappen ½ Neugroschen orange 1 Neugroschen rosa und Paar 5 Neugroschen graublau, alles mit klaren "11" mit nebengesetztem DKr. "ALTENBURG 15 SPT. 66". In Triest rückseitig mit "52" in roter Kreide notiert, in Alexandria frankiert mit GB 1 Sh. grün, entwertet mit "B01", für die Beförderung nach Singapur und hier mit weiteren "25" holländischen Cent für den restlichen Weg mit holländischem Schiff taxiert. Ein sehr seltener, hochattraktiver und frischer Beleg aus der bekannten Korrespondenz an den Apotheker Steudemann.

WUERTTEMBERG - INDIA: 1860, part paid lettersheet to Tezpore, Assam, franked with 1859, 18 kr. blue, good margins with ca. 9mm sheet margin at left, in combination with 1857, 1 kr. brown in horizontal pair, tied by clear "SINDELFINGEN 19 MAI 1860"; travelled via Trieste (handstamp "15" on reverse), Alexandria (2.6.), Bombay(26.6.) and Calcutta (5.7.). The letter was paid till Alexandria, here charged with "1/-" for the remaining way, corresponding to Indian "St. Bg. As 8" to be paid by the recipient. A marvellous letter in very fine condition, especially considering the thin paper of the entire. Letters from Württemberg to India via Trieste are very rare. Certificate Irtenkauf BPP(1996)

Der Brief war bis Alexandria bezahlt, hier mit "1/-" für den restlichen Weg belastet, entsprechend indischer Taxstempel "St. Bg. As 8", die vom Empfänger zu zahlen waren. Ein prachtvoller Brief in sehr schöner einwandfreier Erhaltung, besonders in Anbetracht des dünnen Briefpapieres. Briefe von Württemberg nach Indien über Triest sind sehr selten. NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - TURKISH EMPIRE: 1869, lettersheet from the well-known 'Holstein'-correspondance to Constantinople, franked with 1868, ¼ gr. lilac in pair, ½ gr. orange and 2 gr. blue, all tied by blue "BERLIN POST-EXP.23  13/1 69", the foreign share of "2" gr. noted in blue crayon. Light creasing and little unfresh, but still fine. a scarce destination.

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION - EGYPT: 1868, envelope from Dresden "via Trieste" to Cairo, franked with ¼ gr. violet and 5 gr. ocre, both with neat framed  "DRESDEN II. / 19 III 68"; at Alexandria additionally franked with Egypt 1867, 1 Piaster red, cancelled by single-circle "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 28 MARZ. 68" and forwarded to Cairo. The postage consists of 1 groschen German inland fee, 2 groschen for the sea postage from Trieste to Alexandria and 2¼ groschen for the internal Egyptian postage. Only during a short transitional period this fee was paid with a stamp and not settled interally. Only very few such combination covers are recorded. Certificates Spalink BPP (1992) and Holcombe (1992)

1868, ¼ Groschen violett und 5 Groschen ockerbraun, beide mit sauberem sächsischem Rahmenstempel "DRESDEN II. / 19 III 68" auf Briefkuvert mit Leitvermerk "via Triest" nach Kairo. Der Brief wurde von Triest mit dem österreichischen Lloyd nach Alexandria befördert und dem österreichischem Postamt übergeben; hier frankiert mit Ägypten 1867, 1 Piaster rot und an die ägyptische Staatspost weitergeleitet. Von dieser die ägyptische Marke entwertet durch Einkreisstempel "POSTE VICE-REALI EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 28 MARZ. 68" und nach Kairo befördert. Das Porto setzt sich zusammen aus 1 Groschen deutscher Inlandsgebühr sowie 4¼ Groschen Weiterfranko, davon 2 Groschen für die Seepostbeförderung von Triest nach Alexandria sowie 2¼ Groschen für das  ägyptischen Porto; nur während einer kurzen Übergangsperiode wurde diese Gebühr als Marke verklebt und nicht anderweitig verrechnet. Es sind nur ganz wenige derartige Kombinationsbriefe bekannt. Atteste Spalink BPP (1992) und Holcombe (1992)

The stamps paid the postage till Alexandria, here charged with "1/-" for the remaining way with corresponding Indian "St. Bg. As. 8". The envelope with small faults, the 2 gr. with crease. A very rare part paid letter, just 1 further letter recorded before the reduction of the British share to 6 pence on june 7th, 1868.

A fantastically fresh letter with 1 groschen Union postage and 7 Groschen onward postage. Covers to Japan from this early period are great rarities.

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION-NEW ZEALAND, 1868, Envelope from "SOMMERSTEDT 5 7 68" via Trieste and Alexandria to Nelson on the southern Island of New Zealand, prepaid with 3 copies 1868, 5 groschen ocre and single ½ groschen orange; on reverse transit- and arrival marks of Woyens, Trieste, Nelson and Westport. Postal notations in blue and red crayon somewhat faded, fine and fresh cover for this destination.The old 15½ groschen rate via Trieste was reduced 1.1.1868 to 13½ groschen, but all recorded letters coming from the OPD Kiel are franked with the old rate, which seems to have remained for the former duchies of Schleswig-Holstein. A fine and extremely rare letter. Signed Pfenninger.

1868, Briefkuvert von "SOMMERSTEDT 5 7 68" über Triest und Alexandria nach Nelson auf der Südinsel Neuseelands. Der Brief ist frankiert mit 1868, ½ Groschen orange und drei Werten 5 Groschen ocker; rückseitig Durchgangs- und Ankunftsstempel von Woyens, Triest, Nelson und Westport. Taxvermerke mit rotem und blauem Kreidestift etwas verblasst, sonst gute und für diese Destination frische Erhaltung. Der alte Tarif von 15½ Groschen via Triest wurde am 1.1.1868 auf 13½ Groschen gesenkt, aber alle bekannten Briefe aus der OPD Kiel sind nach dem alten Tarif frankiert, der für die ehemaligen Herzogtümer Schleswig-Holsteins anscheinend beibehalten wurde. The adhesives with slight marginal staining and 20 c. rounded corner at lower right, otherwise fine. A very rare item; the only recorded letter from the Netherlands via Trieste to the Holy Land.

The letter is endorsed "Via Triest&Suez", on reverse transit marks of Vienna and Hongkong and arrival mark of the British PO. The left stamp of the strip lightly affected by horizontal cover crease, the 20 c. missing corner perf at lower right, otherwise very fine and fresh, especially for this exotic destination. A rare letter. Certificate Marchand (2015)

1870, kompletter Faltbrief nach Yokohama, frankiert mit 1862/81, 5 C. ocker, 20 C. orange und 30 C. hellultramarin im 3er Streifen, entwertet mit L1 "NEUKIRCH a/Th" und zusätzlichem EKr. "BÜRGLEN 5 JUNI 70"; Leitvermerk "Via Triest&Suez", rückseitig Transitstempel von Wien und Hongkong und Ankunftsstempel der britischen Post. Die linke Marke des Streifens leicht durch waagerechten Briefbug beeinträchtigt, die 20 C. rechts unten eckrund, sonst sehr schöne und frische Erhaltung, besonders für diese exotische Destination. UNITED STATES - GREECE: 1860, envelope from New York to Athens, franked with 1857/61, 1 c. blue as 'Carrier fee', tied by "23 NEW YOR AM. PKT. OCT. 29"; endorsed "Via England" but transported via Prussia and Trieste with red "Aachen 3 12" on reverse next to arrival mark (in mistake 3.11., Julian calendar). On front noted in blue crayon "55 10 15" neukreuzer for the conveyance from New York to the Greek harbour and in red crayon the total due of "255" lepta to be paid by the recipient. A very fine and most likely unique part paid letter to Greece. Signed Holcombe and Todd

UNITED STATES - EGYPT: 1860, envelope with imprint "U.S. Customs House, New Orleans. Collector's Office. Official Business" and endorsed "George S. Denison Spe. agt. & act. Coll. of Customs" to the Consul general at Alexandria, franked with 1861/67, 3 c. rose in block of 15, tied by "New Orleans La. Dec. 9, 1864" cds. and additional target cancels. The franking covered the rate via great Britain, but the letter was forwarded via Aachen (29.1.) and Trieste (1.1.), arrival mark of the Austrian PO (11.1.). Very Fine and highly exhibitable. IONIAN ISLANDS-AUSTRIA, 1859, Entire prepaid letter from "ITAKA 16 JUNE (5)9" to Triest, as usual franked in transit (the little town had not yet been supplied with stamps) with 1859, 1 d. blue for the internal Ionian postage, tied by fancy "KEFALONIA 1859 JUNE 17" with adjacent matching blue boxed "FRANCA"; on reverse manuscript "15" (new kreuzer) in red crayon indicating the paid sea postage to Trieste; arrival mark of June 22nd. A rare and most attractive letter posted on the 2nd day of issue of the Ionian postage stamps. Signed Giulio Bolaffi with certificate (1966) and Alberto Diena with certificate (1962) (SG 2)
