Top left stamp faint tear and some very faint creasing, otherwise very fine. Very rare and attractive; just 2 further blocks of 4 have been recorded of this stamp (both also with faults). (Scott 1)

5 c. red-brown on blued paper, very slightly touched in one spot at left, otherwise clear to mostly large margins, tied by 6-bar target to entire letter, without further dispatch mark, from Santiago to San Fernando, dated inside "Julio 4 de 1853". The first issue of Chile was issued on July 1 1853, a Friday. This is the earliest recorded use of a Colon stamp on letter and virtually the 'First day cover' of Chilean philately. 5 c. red-brown on blued paper, vertical pair, together with 10 c. deep bright blue on yellowish paper, all with ample to mostly large margins, the pair with part of adjoining stamp at base, tied by bright red target cancels, crosswise applied on the pair, with adjacent red straight-line "COPIAPO" to lettersheet to Cordoba, Argentina, . The paper of the entire partly slightly weak in the folds, otherwise very fine and fresh. A beautiful and very rare letter. Very fine and fresh. One of the most outstanding letters of Chilean philately, bearing marginal copies of both Gillet Recess values and transported by ship from a small town which possessed no datestamp at that time.
