Venezuela: 1872, folded cover, internally docketed “Caracas, Sept 6”, endorsed “via St. Thomas & Havana”, presumably carried privately to St. Thomas, where the first portion of the routing instruction was likely crossed-out, handstamped there with oval marking of Maduro & Cie, “forwarding” written in manuscript within, franked with two single 4d vermilion, plate 12, tied by crisp St Thomas PAID C51 duplex (16 Sep), to New York, where struck with “NEW YORK / U.S. NOTES / 20” c.d.s. (4 Oct), light wrinkles, a fine and desirable franking.

This cover would have been carried to Havana via British steamship, then transferred to an American vessel for the journey to New York.  The United States portion was unpaid, leaving the recipient with 20c due

(1 Jul) in black, carried on the Steamer “Maracaibo” and franked by top marginal HAPAG 1875 10c black, blue-green & yellow, cancelled by target handstamp in black, steamer endorsement “Maracaibo” crossed-out upon arrival in San Juan and altered to the “Mersey”, the letter prepaid with Great Britain 1865 4 d. vermilion pl. 14 boldly tied by "C61" obliterator in black with 'Porto Rico' cds below (4 Jul), thence to Puerto Plata (internal docketing of receipt July 7), small tear in “to” or “Porto”, trivial imperfections of no importance given the immense rarity of this extraordinary combination usage; signed Alberto Diena.

1856/1910s, a powerful and specialized collection with many desirable items, note selection of approximately fifty items 1856/72 issues, mix of mint and used, noting better examples including 1856 3c mint pair, 1872 4c blue imperforate and imperforate between pairs, note one with partial New York cancellation, study of 1873/1902 Coat of Arms issues, over four hundred stamps, many mint, often carefully identified by the AFA catalogue, including frame types, inverted watermarks, plate flaws, etc, with some mint multiples including 1c block of four, 3c block of nine, and 5c block of four, these also noting postmark interest including St. Jan, steamship cancels, etc, fulsome twentieth century issues noting 1905 Christian IX set mint and used, 1905 Harbour set mint and used, including a mint set in blocks of four, 1905 surcharge set mint and used, 1907 Frederick VIII mint and used including some shade varieties, useful Postage Dues including 1905 set in imperforate singles and pairs, over forty stamps with British Post Office cancellations, strikes of varying quality, a nice selection of 1906/16 “Julien” labels, private ship mail with RMSP, Rasco, 1864-9 St Thomas – La Guaira – Porto Cabello, two mint HAPAG issues, showing both types, etc, note a handful of items with certificates from S. Gronlund or Helge Witt, varied condition as expected, though assembled over many years with great diligence, with many difficult items included, chiefly fine, an impressive and in-depth holding that could form the basis for a significant specialized collection.

Postal Stationery to foreign destinations, 1880s/1900s, with 30 items, many scarce, noting usages of 2c blue stationery cover including 1883 to Norway, 1885 to New York, and 1886 to Hamburg with St. Thomas paquebot transit, range of 3c Arms stationery types, noting postage due to Denmark, 1884 usage to St. Kitts, 1887 to Canada, 1890 to British Guiana, 1892 to Dominica, 1893 usages to Paris, and Denmark with French paquebot transit, another endorsed “per Royal Mail Steamer”, 1894 usage to Haiti and from Christiansted to Leipzig via St. Thomas, 1896 3c stationery cover to Oppeln, 1905 Type 5bit+5bit postage due to Denmark, with attached reply card, 1905 Type 10bit card to Switzerland, Netherlands, and to Denmark, 1909 to Hannover with attached reply card, some faults to be expected, yet a rare and diverse assembly with many desirable destinations, much being fine and quite scarce.

½ Groschen ziegelrot und 1 Groschen karmin je mit dänischem Ringstempel "1" von Kopenhagen auf Faltbriefhülle aus Lübeck nach Kopenhagen mit Ankunftsstempel 11.4.(72). Die Marken sind farbfrisch, deutlich geprägt und gut gezähnt, die Groschenmarke hat darüber hinaus unten leicht raue Zahnung, in tadelloser Erhaltung. Eine Schiffsauflieferung in Lübeck durch die Firma “Wendt & Schwartz Lübeck“ mit dem Sonderporto für Briefe von Lübeck bzw. Travemünde nach Dänemark und Entwertung der Frankatur bei der Anlandung in Kopenhagen. Sehr seltene und schöne Fremdentwertung, mit dem 1 1⁄2 Groschen-Porto haben wir nur drei Briefe registriert, Fotoattest Dr. Zill BPP (2024)
