"D. K. D. / Deutsches Kohlendepot S.A. Egyptienne-Port Said" free post machine cancellation in red with Egypt 13 mills franking at right, mailed to Berlin with Egyptian Port Said transit cds in black of the following day. Extremely scarce example of mail from the German Marine Coaling Depot on the Suez Canal, minor mark at right but in very fine condition.
1856, Entire letter to Cologne struck with superb "Alexandrien" cds of despatch, rated in red crayon ´9/9´ (kreuzer, land and sea rate); struck with fine "6 1/4" handstamp in transit at Trieste (silvergroschen). Cologne arrival cds on reverse (29/11). A fine and attractive entire.
1865: 10 s. blue and 15 s. brown, both perf. 9 1/2, each on seperate covers, with 10 s. on 1866 aged cover to Jaffa tied by "Alexandrien" datestamp and 15 s. brown used on cover to Constantinople similarly cancelled with "Lloyd Agenzie / Smirne" transit and "Lloyd Agenzie / Costantinopoli" arrival cds on reverse.
1862, 1 sh. green, corner fault repaired at lower right, used on "Telegram / Per Alexandria, Cairo & Suez Telegraph" envelope to Bombay, tied by "BO2" obliterator in black with "Suez" British P.O. single ring cds below (Nov 17). Reverse with red seal of the Telegraph Company. Despite fault, a rare cover.
1862, Entire letter from Cairo to Marseille, struck with circular "Posta Europea / Cairo" in black (Type IV), franked in Alexandria with France 1853 imperforate 10 c. bistre, one margin shaved and fine 40 c. orange tied by ´3704´petit chiffres with Alexandrie cds below (May 13). Marseille arrival cds (May 19) on reverse of an attractive combination cover.
10 c. bistre and 40 c. orange, both with large to cut into margins, used on small November 1860 incoming cover from Paris, addressed to "Mr. Edmond Henry, Ingénieur civil, employé à la compagnie de l´isthmus de Suez", unusually struck with manuscript erased "PD" in red, with Alexandria French P.O. cds on reverse (Dec 11). Scarce.
1863, Combination cover from Cairo to Marseille with circular "Posta Europea / Caire" in black (Type IV) and franked at French P.O. in Alexandria with 1853 imperforate 80 c. carmine and 1862 perf. 20 c. blue tied by ´5080´gros chiffres. Framed "P.P." at top and reverse with Marseille arrival cds. A rare mixed issue cover.
Napoleon 10 c. bistre and 40 c. orange, upper perfs. trimmed, used on fine 1865 entire letter to Paris cancelled by ´5080´gros chiffres and by red Marseille entry marking. French P.O. in Alexandria cds alongside (Jan 11) and reverse with Paris arrival (Jan 20).
10 c. bistre and 40 c. orange used on 1863 combination cover from Cairo to Paris, tied by gros chiffres ´5080´ with framed "P.P." at right and fair "Posta Europea / Cairo" datestamp (Type VI) at right (March 7). Some edge wear to envelope but a scarce combination and a very early usage of the newly introduced Type VI Posta Europea datestamp.
1872, Entire letter from Alexandria to Bordeaux franked by 1863/67 80 c. carmine rose tied by bold ´5080´gros chiffres. Alexandrie datestamp at left (May 8) and reverse with Marseille and Bordeaux arrival cds.
1873, Siège 40 c. orange and 1871/75 80 c. rose used on small envelope to St. Gallen, Switzerland tied by poor strikes of Cairo ´5119´gros chiffres and by framed "Paquebots De La Mediterranee" in red. "Le Caire / Bau. Francais" cds alongside (Sept 15). Reverse with Ambulant and St. Gallen arrivl cds (Sept 23). A scarce Office and destination.
1871/75, Ceres 30 c. bistre brown vertical pair used on entire letter from Cairo to Switzerland, tied by ´5119´gros chiffres and framed "Paquebots de la Mediterrannee" in red. "Le Caire" cds at left in black (Jan 11) and reverse with Marseille, Geneva, Zurich and Burgdorf cds´s (Jan 20). File folds away from adhesives, a fine and scarce entire.
1859, Stampless entire letter to Syra struck with "Alexandria / Turkey" datestamp of despatch in green, red "Paid" at upper right and reverse with crayon manuscript ´70´(lepta) and Syra arrival cds.
1871, 40 lepta rosy mauve on blued paper, a fine four margined example used on entire letter to Syra cancelled by ´97´dotted lozenge of Alexandria with "Alexandria / Turkey" cds alongside and Syra arrival on reverse. Adhesive crossed by light file fold but of fine appearance.
1872, 20 lepta blue, a fine horizontal pair tied to letter to Syra by neat strike of "Alexandria / Turkey" datestamp in black with fine repeated strike alongside. Red ´Paid´ marking below and Syra arrival on reverse of a fine and attractive entire.
1863, Entire letter with Italy 1863 60 c. lilac tied by small cartridge "Piroscafi / Postali / Italiani" in blue-black, with corresponding "Alessandria D´Egitto" cds (June 11) alongside, Ancona arrival cds on reverse, a fine entire.
1874, "Estero" 40 c. carmine rose used on cover to Livorno cancelled by ´234´ numeral obliterator with Alessandria D´Egitto" cds (May 10) below. Reverse with Brindisi transit and Livorno (May 14) arrival cds; also a large piece of cover with Italy 1863 40 c. rose (2) with rare keyhole "Per Consegna" cancellation.
1865/66, 2 pia. blue and rose with horizontal background, a fine four margined example used on small piece and cancelled by good strike of rare circular Russian Arms Cyrillic cachet "ROPIT / Aleksandrisk Agentstvo" in blue with framed "P.P." above. A very rare and fine usage (Smith Type OB2).
2 pia. blue and rose with horizontal background, superb four margined example used on large part 1867 entire letter to Latakia cancelled by outstanding strike of circular dated "PORT ALEXSANDRIYA" datestamp (Feb 21) in blue (Smith Type D1). A superb cover of great visual appeal and rarity. Ex collection Rothschild (Friedl, Oct 7, 1942 lot 392).
2 pia. blue and rose with horizontal background, fine four margined horizontal pair on slightly faulty entire letter from Smyrna to Alexandria, the adhesives tied by rare dotted "783" numeral obliterator in blue. Reverse with good large part strike of rare "PORT ALEKSANDRIYA" datestamp of receipt in blue (Smith Type D1). A rare cover.
1872/79, 1 kop. brown and 5 kop. deep blue on vertically laid paper, used on cover to Alexandria and tied by indistinct "Latakia" datestamp in blue, showing good impression of scarce "Alexandriya Agentsvo ROPIT" datestamp in blue on reverse (Smith D2). Some small imperfections but a scarce example of the 6 kopek Ship rate. Certificate Holcombe.
Suez Canal Company. 1868, 1 c. black with large margins all round, unused with slight thin; 5 c. green fresh mint example and an unused example; 20 c. blue superb mint and 40 c. rose red superb mint. A fine selection (Mi. 770,-)
