war ein deutscher Ornithologe und Maler, Regierungs-Sekretär des Britischen Gouverneurs.

Sohn eines Bäckers und Brauers wurde zur kaufmännischen Ausbildung nach Berlin geschickt, änderte dort aber seine Berufspläne und wurde Kunstmaler.

1837 reiste er zum ersten Mal nach Helgoland; die Insel blieb ab 1841 sein ständiger Wohnsitz.

Er freundete sich mit Ferdinand Julius Hindemann (Unehelicher Sohn Goethes) an, dieser brachte Gätke mit einer Nasenflöte die Nachahmung der Mövenrufe bei.

26.8.1841 dichtete August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben das Lied der Deutschen Ab 1843 galt sein Interesse vorrangig der Vogelkunde; etwa zehn Jahre später begann der Autodidakt, der bis dahin eine umfangreiche Vogelbalgsammlung zusammengetragen und Kontakte mit zahlreichen deutschen und englischen Ornithologen gepflegt hatte, wissenschaftliche Arbeiten zu publizieren. 1891 erschien sein Werk 'Die Vogelwarte Helgoland'. Im gleichen Jahr erwarb die preußische Regierung seine Sammlung für das Nordsee-Museum der Biologischen Anstalt Helgoland. Der größte Teil dieser Sammlung fiel 1944 den Bomben des 2. Weltkriegs zum Opfer, die erhaltenen Stücke sind im Wattenmeerhaus des Instituts für Vogelforschung in Wilhelmshaven zu besichtigen.

Theodor Fontane, der seinen Verwandten Heinrich Gätke in seiner Jugend zuletzt gesehen hatte, bezeichnete Gätke 1891 in einem Brief, der ein Wiedersehen nach über sechzig Jahren in Aussicht stellte, als Inselkönig.

Die Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation bewahrt Briefmarkenentwürfe Gätkes, die dieser um 1874/1875 für die Reichsdruckerei in Berlin herstellte und mit Angaben zum Druck versah, auf.

1733/1998 (ca.), very large mint never hinged/unused and mostly used balance of a collection, incl. Postage Dues, with an abundance of duplicates and some better items, starting with Queen Victoria Penny Black(6), 1847 1 sh. (2), Victorian imperforates in numbers, etc., together with a selection of prephilatelic entires, 1733 Bishop´s Mark, Penny Reds frankings, etc., mixed condition, neatly housed in two stockbooks and one album

1815/1900 (ca.), extensive unused and mostly used collection with plenty of covers, incl. Fiscals and Related Areas, specialized with an abundance of duplicates, many better items starting with a used Mulready and some caricatures, the Penny Black SG-Nr.1/3(46) used and on covers (6) including plates 1a-b until 10 cpl., Two  Pence Blue SG-Nr. 4/6(21) used, 1d. red-brown printed from the black plates SG-Nr. 7 cpl. range of the eleven plates, SG-Nr. 13/15(95), 54/56(6, one on cover), 57(6), 58/60(4), later issues up to the highest values, etc., together with a fine selction of entires and covers with multiple and combination frankings. Somewhat in mixed condition as to be expected, mostly fresh, a most remarkable, impressive and attractive collection, in two albums

Postage Dues, Revenues and Related Areas, with an abundance of duplicates, some better values, a strong selection of Machin, some perfins and booklets, together with a few covers and postal stationeries, also a small group of Ireland. Overall condition fine to very fine, in four stockbooks and one album

1817/55, group of over 160 entires, incl. incoming mail and foreign destinations, plenty of postmarks, fee annotations, etc., mostly fine 

1840/1970, valuable, mostly used selection with emphasis on classic issues, starting with Penny Black, furthermore Mi.-Nr. 2 on cover and on piece, Mi.-Nr. 5-7 with several copiues each, also Mi.-Nr.49, 50(3), 54, 66(4), 67(2), 68(2),69y, 84ax(3), 84ay, 84bx(2), 85, 99(4) and 118(2) used, furthermore Mi.-Nr. 7b, 70-71, 78, 80, 82(2), 83, 118(3) and 144 unused, in addition some better modern varities like Mi.-Nr. 491FI, 504FIII and Mi.-Nr. 506FI, conditions vary, some signed and 14 certificates Louis BPP

1840/1940, Introduction of the Uniform Penny Post, collection on exhibition pages beginning with a small handwritten note dated “2 July 1852” and signed “your obedient servant, William Mulready”, then an unused example each of the 1d black and 2d blue lettersheets and envelopes, lettersheet 1d black cancelled by black maltese cross and “LYNN /JY 12/1841" double-arc cds in black, correctly used to Falkenham and an unused Mulready caricature. There follows a page on the stamp issues with a used example each of the 1d black and 2d blue, 1d black on folded letter and 2d blue on slightly blued paper, cancelled by crisp black maltese cross and used on folded letter “with day list” within London. Also extensive documentation of commemoration in 1890 and 1940. Slightly mixed condition.
