"NAUVOO Ills." and 10 c. pen cancelled and tied by manuscript mark to folded letter to Lucon, red boxed "SHORT PAID" black "NEW YORK 6" and magenta handwritten "15" struck out by "16" decimes handstamp alongside. Part of the address restored, 5 c. stamp with faint crease at bottom, otherwise very fine. This is the only example of a Short Paid handstamp on a cover franked by a 5c. 1856 issue, illustrated in Frajola and Meyer, page 75, fig. 6-23, certificate PF. The plate used to print the imperforated 10 c. 1855 stamps contained only one horizontal pair of type II and II, located in position 2L and 3L! Certificate PF. Hodges, care of US Consul Panama", redirected in care of yet another person in New Grenada "Favored by Mr. I. de Sabla", with complete contents. Part of backflap and small part at top of cover missing, two small faint tape stains at left, otherwise fine, a very interesting cover with a very early use of a well-known Panama forwarder, certificate PF. "NEW BEDFORD MASS AUG 2" to envelope addressed to "Master Ship Nautilus" in Paita Peru. This cover paid the 32c rate to Peru via American Packet then British Packet via Panama, backflap almost missing and small tear at top of envelope, very good appearance, scarce franking to a very rare destination and one of only three or four recorded 1851 Issue covers to Peru, certificate PF. AUG 24" (1857) to envelope to Liverpool with adjacent "AMERICA PAID LIVERPOOL"; the envelope with age wear, tear at top right closed, stamps with light creasing at top; a scarce franking; certificate PF (1999). 12 c. black, diagonal bisect, cut into outer frameline at top , clear margin at left, tied by datestamp "SAN FRANCISCO CAL. 16 JUN" (1853) on envelope to Kentucky, endorsed "per Steamship 'Northerner' 18 June" ; the envelope repaired in the margins; a rare and attractive cover. Note: A shortage of 3 c. stamps in San Francisco led to the use of bisected 12c. stamps to pay the 6 c. letter rate from May until September 1853, when the bisects were prohibited in the East.

1861/67, 30 c. orange and 3 c. pink (straight-edge at right), tied by circle of bars to envelope with adjacent red "NEW BEDFORD MASS. PAID JAN 13" to Mangonui, New Zealand with Auckland arrival mark on front; the envelope skillfully repaired at top; an attractive and scarce franking to a very unusual destination. KINGMAN'S CITY POST: 2 c. black on blueish, "Kingman's" erased, top left corner sheet margins, other sides clear to touching, tied by manuscript cancel that appears to be the initial "M" (possibly Joseph G. Martin) and 1851 Washington 3c. claret, no inner frame lines, close to just touched margins tied by blue cds. "RALEIGH N.C. JU ? 1857" to envelope to Charleston with detailed street address in another handwriting, presumably applied at Charleston, part of two backflaps missing, small ink spots at top, otherwise very fine.
