1851/69, 3 d. dull red in block of 4, 2 values touched at one or two sides, otherwise good to large margins, with single stamp with clear to large margins on all sides, tied by grill cancel "1" to large blue folded insurance circular, used to forward an enclosure (docketing on reverse) from "ST. JOHN NEW BRUNSWICK JY 7 1855" to Fredericton with arrival mark of the same day; some ironed filing creases incl. 2 affecting the block. 3 d. dull red, 6 d. olive-yellow and 1 shilling reddish purple, tied by 2 clear strikes of grill "12" to quintuple rate registered lettersheet from "EDMUNDSTON AU 1 1858" to Fredericton with arrival mark; the 6 d. with light ironed filing crease, otherwise fine and very attractive. 3 d. dull red, diagonal bisect in pair, good colour and wide remaining margins, tied by pen cancellation to lettersheet, backstamped "W.O. KINGSTON. KENT N.B NY 28 1860" to Moncton with indistinct transit and arrival marks. A unique usage of a double 3 d. bisect, used shortly after the introduction of the Cents-Currency due to lack of 5 cent stamps since the Connel-stamp was not issued; certificates Philatelic Foundation (1956) and BPA (1976). 3 d. dull red on blued paper, a diagonally bisected example used with two further single examples, one with corner fault at edge of envelope at right, pre-paying the 7½ d. rate on 1858 cover to Miss Smith in London, England tied by oval '1' barred obliterators in black. ST. JOHN - NEW BRUNSWICK despatch cds on reverse (Jan 11) in black. London arrival cds (Jan 26) in red on front. Despite the fault a rare franking on an attractive small cover. Cert. BPA (1977) Scott 1b+1 = $ 4'750+ / Gi = £ 3'000+.

3 d. dull red, diagonal bisect and horizontal pair, mostly clear to good margins, the right stamp of the pair partly slightly touched, tied by black grill cancel to small envelope from St. John to Ballymoney in Ireland, showing on front quite clear "AMERICA / DUBLIN PAID JA 10 1858"; 2 tears in the envelope repaired and the cover cleaned, part of the reverse flap missing; a rare letter, only 5 covers from New Brunswick to Ireland have been recorded; certificate Philatelic Foundation (1980). 1851/60: 3 d. dull red, a magnificent strip of three with large margins all round, top stamp diagonally bisected to prepay the 7½ d. rate to Durham, England, tied to 1859 cover by barred '23' numeral obliterators of Richibucto. At right circular '7½d /Cs.' handstamp in red and manuscript notation 'pd'. Reverse with RICHIBUCTO / NB datestamp of despatch (July 25), Sackville transit cds and Sunderland (Aug 7) arrival. File fold well away from the superb adhesives, a very rare cover. Cert. RPS (1959) Scott 1b = $ 4'750 / Gi. = £ 3'000.

3 d. dull red, diagonal bisect in strip with 2 normal stamps, cut into large margins, tied by grill cancels to lettersheet from St. John 1856 to Glasgow with red "PKT. LETTER PAID LIVERPOOL" partly tying the stamps; the entire somewhat unfresh, a crease through the bisect ironed and stamps not quite correct replaced; a rare entire; certificate Greene (1989) Provenance: Joseph Hackmey

1851/60: 3 d. dull red, a diagonally bisected example used as 1½ d. with 6 d. yellow on blued paper with large margins all round and portion of adjoining stamp at left, used on 1859 entire letter from Lancaster via Halifax to Hull, England; tied by barred '1' numeral obliterators in black. Reverse with 'St. John / NB' datestamp (Sept 19) and Hull arrival cds (Oct 3). Some file folds but a most attractive entire of great scarcity. Certs. RPS (1932 and 1968) Scott 1b+2 = $ 4'750 / Gi. 3'000. Note: A very similar entire from this correspondence was in the Kanai collection (Oct 1986) lot 2026.

1851/60: 3 d. dull red on blued paper, a diagonally bisected example used with 6 d. olive-yellow on blued, margin just touched at right, pre-paying the 7½ d. rate on 1855 mourning cover to Miss Smith in Ware, Herts., England tied by oval '1' barred obliterator in black. ST. JOHN - NB / PAID despatch at left (May 21) in brown and BRITISH / 5 d. / CLAIM in same ink. The adhesives also tied by framed 'Packet Letter / Paid / Liverpool' in red (June 17) and London datestamp of the following day. Ware arrival cds in green on reverse of a rare and attractive cover Scott 1b+2 = $ 4'750+ / Gi = £ 3'000+. Note: The Arthur Hind cover (May, 1934) lot 246, was used to the same addressee on the same day.

3 d. dull red, diagonal bisect with clear to mostly good margins together with slightly touched 6 d. olive-yellow with clear grill "1" on mourning cover to England and here re-directed, the stamps additionally tied by accountancy mark "BRITISH CLAIM 5 c." and boxed "PKT. LETTER PAID LIVERPOOL"; the 6 d. small marginal faults where affixed at the edge of the cover; an attractive and rare letter, certificate Alberto Diena (1965). 1851/60:  6 d. olive-yellow on blued, a diagonally bisected example used to pay the 3 d. inter-provincial rate, used on 1860 cover to Bend tied by barred oval obliterator '8' with corresponding 'Chatham / NB' cds on reverse (April 30). A fine and rare usage. Cert. RPS (1975) Scott 2b = $ 3'500 / Gi = £ 3'000.

6 d. olive-yellow, 2 bisects, both with large margins on one side, one just clear and the other just cut-into on the other side, both tied by clear grill "12" to orange envelope from "EDMINSTON MR 1 1860" to Bangor, Maine with frontside transit marks "NEW BRUNSWICK" and "HOULTON ME. 6 d. olive-yellow, diagonal bisect and entire stamp, both with good to large margins and fresh colour, tied by blue grill "8" to lettersheet from "CHATHAM AP 29 1859" via Sackville and Halifax to St. John's, New Foundland; the single stamp with tiny and almost invisible marginal tear, otherwise very fine; a unique franking paying 8 d. letter rate via British Packet to New Foundland (as the lowest denominated  stamp was 3 d. it was only possible to overpay the rate if prepayment was made in stamps). 1 shilling reddish mauve, mostly clear to good margins, slightly touched at one side only, tied by grill "1" to lettersheet with adjacent "ST. JOHN NEW BRUNSWICK JA .. 1855" and "PACKET LETTER" to London , also manuscript "2" for 2 d. (= 3 d. currency) charge to be collected at delivery; a fine letter and supposed to be the unique example of 15 pence letter rate (so-called 'Crimean war rate) via the US to England; certificates Philatelic Foundation (1959 and 1991). 1 shilling dull violet, horizontal pair and single with diagonal bi-sect or tri-sect 3 d. dull red, tied by grill "4" to envelope from "BATHURST NO 14 1859" via London and Panama to Callao, Peru; franking with mostly good margins, touched in places, shilling-values small marginal tears and the bi-sect with crease; the cover restored and pressed. A very rare franking and the only known cover from New Brunswick to South America, also the only recorded use of a 1 shilling pair on cover; certificate BPA (1999). Note: It is believed that the sender intended to use the 3 d. as a tri-sect to make up the 36½ d. rate with 37 d. franking as the closest possible way to fulfill this rate; assuming the 3 d. was bi-sected, the overpayment would be 1 d. RPS, BPA); also two 1860/63 covers with 5 c. single franking and two 5 c. used on cover to the USA, as well as a fine 10 c. red bisected on cover to St. Johns (cert. BPA). Condition variable but an extraordinary lot of enormous catalogue value.
