1851/60: 6 d. olive-yellow on blued, a diagonally bisected example used to pay the 3 d. inter-provincial rate, used on 1860 cover to Bend tied by barred oval obliterator '8' with corresponding 'Chatham / NB' cds on reverse (April 30). 6 d. olive-yellow, diagonal bisect tied by grill "12" to envelope backstamped "EDMUNSTON JA 26 1857" to Hamilton, Canada with arrival mark and front side transit mark "SCHAUMBURG JY 28 1857"; the envelope with filing crease at bottom, and fine and scarce entire with ½ ounce letter rate to Canada, only 4 recorded. 6 d. olive-yellow, 2 bisects, both with large margins on one side, one just clear and the other just cut-into on the other side, both tied by clear grill "12" to orange envelope from "EDMINSTON MR 1 1860" to Bangor, Maine with frontside transit marks "NEWÂ BRUNSWICK" and "HOULTON ME. 6 d. olive-yellow, diagonal bisect and entire stamp, both with good to large margins and fresh colour, tied by blue grill "8" to lettersheet from "CHATHAM AP 29 1859" via Sackville and Halifax to St. John's, New Foundland; the single stamp with tiny and almost invisible marginal tear, otherwise very fine; a unique franking paying 8 d. letter rate via British Packet to New Foundland (as the lowest denominated stamp was 3 d. it was only possible to overpay the rate if prepayment was made in stamps). 1 shilling reddish mauve, mostly clear to good margins, slightly touched at one side only, tied by grill "1" to lettersheet with adjacent "ST. JOHNÂ NEWÂ BRUNSWICK JA .. 1855" and "PACKETÂ LETTER" to London , also manuscript "2" for 2 d. (= 3 d. currency) charge to be collected at delivery; a fine letter and supposed to be the unique example of 15 pence letter rate (so-called 'Crimean war rate) via the US to England; certificates Philatelic Foundation (1959 and 1991). 1 shilling dull violet, horizontal pair and single with diagonal bi-sect or tri-sect 3 d. dull red, tied by grill "4" to envelope from "BATHURST NO 14 1859" via London and Panama to Callao, Peru; franking with mostly good margins, touched in places, shilling-values small marginal tears and the bi-sect with crease; the cover restored and pressed. A very rare franking and the only known cover from New Brunswick to South America, also the only recorded use of a 1 shilling pair on cover; certificate BPA (1999). Note: It is believed that the sender intended to use the 3 d. as a tri-sect to make up the 36½ d. rate with 37 d. franking as the closest possible way to fulfill this rate; assuming the 3 d. was bi-sected, the overpayment would be 1 d. 1851/60: The Postal History collection (16 covers/entires), with 3 d. red single frankings (5 covers), 3 d. red (two examples) used on double rate cover, 3 d. red (two examples) used on covers to New York (2), 3 d. red used on rare 1852 registered Money Letter franked by three examples for 9 d. rate; 6 d. yellow single frankings on covers to USA (3), 6 d. yellow bisected for 3 d. rate to St. Johns (cert. RPS, BPA); also two 1860/63 covers with 5 c. single franking and two 5 c. used on cover to the USA, as well as a fine 10 c. red bisected on cover to St. Johns (cert. BPA). Condition variable but an extraordinary lot of enormous catalogue value.
1857/64: 8 d. scarlet-vermilion, a diagonally bisected example with large margins on the remaining sides, used as 4 d. to pay the single rate on 1860 cover to Baltimore (Tucker correspondence), tied by barred obliterator in black. 1857: 8 d. scarlet-vermilion, a vertically bisected example (right half) with huge margins, used to pay the 4 d. rate, tied to 1860 cover to Baltimore, USA, Tucker correspondence, by barred obliterator in black with 'St Johns Newfoundland / Paid' cds alongside in red (July 4). 1860: Triangular 3 d. deep green, a superb large margined example used on small 1864 envelope to New Perlican, lightly tied by barred obliterator handstamp in black with fine 'St. Johns-Newfoundland-Paid' cds (Jan 9) struck in black alongside. Reverse with 'New Perlican' arrival cds (Jan 15) in black. Pratt census #33. A fine and scarce cover. Cert. Friedl (1962) Scott 11A = $ 2'000.
1860: 4 d. orange-vermilion, a clear to large margined example of good colour, small corner crease at lower right, used on 1860 cover to Baltimore (Tucker correspondence) and cancelled by black barred obliterator and 'St. Johns-Newfoundland-Paid' cds in red (Oct 16). 'Boston Br. Pkt. / 5' charge marking in black (Oct 17) alongside. The cover crossed by two file folds but a rare usage, Pratt records just 6 covers used with single 4 d. to the USA, this being #3 in the census. Rare. Cert. BPA (1968) Scott 12 = $ 6'000.

1860 (Aug 15): First Day of Issue, the famous cover bearing 4 d. orange-vermilion, used example with large margins at top and at base, shaved at right and touched at left, used on 1860 cover to Baltimore (Tucker correspondence) cancelled by barred obliterator in black. 'St. Johns-Newfoundland-Paid' in red alongside (Aug. 15), overstruck with 'Boston Br. Pkt. / 5' charge marking in black (Aug 22). Despite the small faults, a remarkable and rare cover, only six covers recorded thus - this being used on First Day of Issue of the 4 d. adhesive and the earliest recorded usage of any of the orange-vermilion issue. 1861/62: 4 d. rose-lake, a superb four margined example used on 1864 cover to Cow Bay, Cape Breton; the stamp with scissor cut in margin at base and in upper left corner margin, neither apparent with the naked eye, cancelled by barred obliterator in black. 'St. Johns-Newfoundland-Paid' cds in red at left (June 29) and reverse with 'North Sydney / CB' datestamp of receipt (July 1). The earliest known usage of a 4 d. provincial rate cover (#1 in the Pratt census), with just four covers recorded Scott 18 = $ 5'000.

1861: 5 d. red-brown, a fine four margined example, colour slightly affected by lightening of cancellation, used on 1865 cover to Sydney, Cape Breton endorsed 'per Merlin', tied by black segmented cork cancellation with 'St. Johns / Newfoundland' cds alongside (Dec 27) struck in red. Reverse with both 'North Sydney / NB' and 'Sydney / NB' datestamps (Jan 3, 1856) in black. Minor file folds but only 10 covers are recorded bearing the 1861 5 d. (all shades) this being Pratt #9 in the census Scott 19a = $ 6'500.

1861: 6 d. rose-lake, a superb large margined example in a deep shade, small contemporary affixing crease at left mentioned for accuracy, used on 1862 cover from Greenspond to Poole, England tied by barred obliterator in black. Fine GREENSPOND datestamp at left (Aug 7) in black and 'St. Johns-Newfoundland-Paid' cds in red at left (Aug 15) of transit on front, reverse with black St. John's cds and Poole arrival cds (Sept 13). Envelope with some manuscript docketing but a great rarity - only 12 covers are recorded in the Pratt census (this is #4) - and this is the earliest recorded usage of this stamp. 1851/60: 1 d. red brown on blued paper, a fine horizontal strip of three, ample to large margins all round and of good colour, used on small 1857 envelope to Bay of Ants, New Brunswick neatly cancelled by barred obliterator in black. Reverse with PICTOU / NS datestamp of despatch (June 13), 'Amherst / NS' cds (June 115), 'Sackville' cds, 'Bale-Verte / NB' cds (June 19) and faint arrival with date inserted in manuscript (June 19). A charming and scarce cover. Cert. BPA (1999).

1851/60: 1 d. red-brown on blued and 3 d. blue on blued paper, four margined examples used on 1857 cover Sydney to North Sydney, Cape Breton; tied by barred obliterators in black. Reverse with 'Sydney / CBI' datestamp (Feb 22) and 'North Sydney / CB' arrival cds of the following day. A rare franking in very fine quality for these issues on letter. Cert. PF (1976).
1851/60: 1 d. red brown on blued, 3 d. bright blue and 6 d. deep green all used on delightful small 1860 envelope endorsed 'per Cunard Steamer' to Nice, Sardinia. The adhesives with excellent colour and large margins with just the 1 d. value being just shaved at left, tied by mute barrred grid handstamps in black and by 'London / Paid' transit cds (March 5) in red. Manuscript '1/1d.' at left and reverse with Halifax despatch cds (Feb 23) and 'Nizza Mara.' arrival cds (March 8) in black. A famous and very rare cover. Cert. RPS (2011).
Note: This cover remains the sole known usage to continental Europe other than France - Sardinia returned Nice to France just 16 days after the arrival of this letter as a result of the Treaty of Turin (March 24, 1860).

LETTER PAID LIVERPOOL"; a faint horizontal crease affecting the top 1 d., cover with some staining, otherwise fine; the only recorded cover that shows an overpayment of the 7½ d.-rate. 3 d. deep blue, 2 pairs and single stamp, one pair with large margins all around, the others partly slightly touched, tied by grill cancel to large part of folded quintuple-rate letter from Halifax 1855 to Richibucto, New Brunswick with dispatch and transit marks on reverse; inside with complete text: the sender enclosed 28 pounds in cash and 12 postage stamps equal to 3 shillings...
