½ d. deep rose, horizontal strip of 4 and horizontal pair with 6 d. slate-violet, one stamp of the pair just cut-into the outer frame line, otherwise clear to wide margins, the pair with small bottom sheet margin, the 6 d. with ca. 5 mm right sheet margin, all tied clear numeral "18" to registered lettersheet with adjacent Kingston cds. of 23.11.1857, to New York; the left ½ d. of the strip with crease, where originally fixed around edge of the cover (here re-folded); 2 vertical filing creases through the franking pressed, the cover cleaned; an important showpiece and the only known registered cover to the US at 9 d. rate Provenance: Louise Boyd Dale and Alfred F. The only recorded ½ d. block used in combination with another denomination

½ d. rose on wove paper, 3 copies with ½ d. lilac-rose and 6 d. reddish purple on thick soft paper, 1 d. values partly touched or slightly cut-into at one side, otherwise clear to large margins, tied by several clear strikes of numeral "50" to cover endorsed "via St. Lawrence" and "Prepaid" from "WINDSOR JU 5 1858" to Scotland, carried by the Cunard Packet 'Africa', with transit marks of Hamilton and Liverpool and arrival marks; ½ d. lilac-rose lifted for inspection and replaced by hinge; the ½ d. rose stamps creased before use. Covers carried by the Canadian packet of the Allan Line via Quebec required 7½ d. postage, covers transported by British Packet (Cunard Line) via New York 10 d. (= 8 d. Sterling), for this route the cover was under-paid and accordingly taxed "2" with adjacent straight line "MORE TO PAY". Very thick soft paper: Prince Consort 6 d. reddish-purple, a fine example, close but clear at upper right and with large margins on the other three sides, used on 1858 envelope to Dorchester, Mass., USA lightly tied by '21' numeral with 'Montreal / LC' datestamp below (March 19). Cover with small opening tear at top, but with the original enclosure. A very rare stamp on letter. Cert. BPA (1964) Scott 10 = $ 8'000 / Gi £ 4'000 off cover.
6 d. reddish-purple in horizontal pair with clear to large margins, with central numeral "51" and tied by orange "PAIDÂ 3 d." to registered double-rate envelope with clear adjacent "BROCKVILLE DEÂ 30 1858" to Chicago; on reverse transit mark of Windsor and arrival mark; colour of the franking somewhat faded and the right stamp with vertical crease prior to use, the cover somewhat faulty on reverse. 1859: Beaver 5 c. pale red and 12½ c. pale yellow-green used on 1864 envelope from Quebec to London carried by Cunard Steamer 'China', tied by '37' numeral obliterators of Quebec in black with Quebec/LC cds at left (Feb 20), the adhesives also tied by 'London / Paid' arrival cds (March 8) in red. Part flap missing but a charming and scarce example of the 17½ cent Cunard rate. Signed A. Bolaffi, R. Mondolfo.

A unique usage of a double 3 d. bisect, used shortly after the introduction of the Cents-Currency due to lack of 5 cent stamps since the Connel-stamp was not issued; certificates Philatelic Foundation (1956) and BPAÂ (1976). ST. JOHN - NEW BRUNSWICK despatch cds on reverse (Jan 11) in black. London arrival cds (Jan 26) in red on front. Despite the fault a rare franking on an attractive small cover. Cert. 1851/60: 3 d. dull red, a magnificent strip of three with large margins all round, top stamp diagonally bisected to prepay the 7½ d. rate to Durham, England, tied to 1859 cover by barred '23' numeral obliterators of Richibucto. At right circular '7½d /Cs.' handstamp in red and manuscript notation 'pd'. Reverse with RICHIBUCTO / NB datestamp of despatch (July 25), Sackville transit cds and Sunderland (Aug 7) arrival. Reverse with 'St. John / NB' datestamp (Sept 19) and Hull arrival cds (Oct 3). Some file folds but a most attractive entire of great scarcity. Certs. 1851/60: 3 d. dull red on blued paper, a diagonally bisected example used with 6 d. olive-yellow on blued, margin just touched at right, pre-paying the 7½ d. rate on 1855 mourning cover to Miss Smith in Ware, Herts., England tied by oval '1' barred obliterator in black. ST. JOHN - NB / PAID despatch at left (May 21) in brown and BRITISH / 5 d. / CLAIM in same ink. The adhesives also tied by framed 'Packet Letter / Paid / Liverpool' in red (June 17) and London datestamp of the following day. Ware arrival cds in green on reverse of a rare and attractive cover Scott 1b+2 = $ 4'750+ / Gi = £ 3'000+.
