Arrived in Lonton 19th of November with "COLONIES &c Art 12" struck, charged with "38" decimes in Paris, fine and attractive entire 

1846, CALEDONIA: Folded letter franked with New York Washington 5c. black "ACM", touched at lower right, to Lyon, France. Endorsed "p Str. Caledonia", red "COLONIES & ART 13" and "NEW YORK PAID" alongside, charged "20" decimes upon arrival, fine, certificate PF (1976)

1849 THE NEW TREATY RATE PERIOD

The early voyages had no accounting hand stamps. These were not available until late March in the Exchange Office in Liverpool and early April in the US and then in inadequate numbers for the volume of mail. For the first four months the system worked imperfectly.
