1861, ARAGO: 1857 Washington 3c. red and Franklin 30c. orange tied by red grid to folded letter from "NEW YORK FEB 3" endorsed "pr. Steamer Arago via Marseille" to Melbourne, Australia, the adhesives only paid the route via Southampton, so the cover was put on the "PERSIA", from there on the "PERA" to Alexandria, "SIMLA" to Galle and "BENARES" to Melbourne with arrival mark "MELBOURNE AP 15 61", fine and very attractive

1861, ARAGO: Unpaid envelope (backflap missing) from "PIGEON COVE MAR 29" to Alexandria, Egypt, charged with a total of "32" decimes to Alexandria, fine

1860, HUNGARIAN: Victoria 6d. violet tied by duplex "LONDON FE 8 60" to Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Ship wrecked on Cape Sable, Nova Scotia on the 20th during a gale, 237 lives were lost in this disaster with no survivors, some of the mail bags were washed ashore, reverse with red manuscript "Saved from "SS Hungarian", faults as to be expected, very rare with only 3 covers known from this wreck

"PORTLAND AM. PKT. 24 NOC 4 1861" struck on arrival, the cover was undeliverable due to the Civil War, sent to Dead Letter office and two strikes of red boxed "Sent back to England without a reason for non delivery", fine and interesting entire

1861, NORTH BRITON: Prepaid envelope from "QUEBEC NO 1 1861" with straight-line "6d Paid 7½Cy" to New Orleans, sent via Liverpool to beat the Civil War blockade,departured from Quebec but wrecked on the Mingan Islands in Labrador during a storm on 5th November with total loss but no casualties. Put on the following steamship "Anglo Saxon" and arrived Liverpool 23rd November. Transferred to "Africa", some wear as to be expected, the only known cover from this wreck.

1862, CITY OF WASHINGTON: 3c. rose and 30c. orange, each as horizontal pair, fresh and bright colours, tied by three clear strikes of Boston large "PAID" grid cancel to folded lettersheet endorsed "via England p City of Washington" to Port-Elizabeth, red crayon "12" credit marking and red "LONDON E.C. PAID JY 4 62" alongside, further red "1"d colonial rate, some negligible crease from edge of interior lettersheet (removed), minor edge wear, small affixed lot label, a very fine and rare, colourful 1861 double franking to Cape of Good Hope, certificate PF (2007)
