DEC 14 Paid", London transit and magenta manuscript "40" credit alongside, reverse with clear strike of "SHIP-LETTER-SYDNEY E FE 14 1865", 30c. tear at bottom, 5c. small flaws due to placement near the edge of the cover, otherwise very fine and colorful franking
1864, PERSIA: Victoria 2d. blue, three blocks of six and single and 4d. brownish-red, horizontal pair and two singles, tied by barred numeral "174" with matching cds. "DINGLE OC 18 64" to large part of registered coverfront to Boston, adhesives partly affixed around the envelope, thus some adhesives with larger faults, however a stunning large franking paying the 2oz rate plus registration fee. According to the Karl Louis card register of Great Britain this is the largest franking of this stamp.
1865, AFRICA: Franklin 1c. blue horizontal pair and two horizontal pairs Washington 10c. green tied by circle of wedges to folded letter to Neuchatel, Switzerland, red "NEW YORK PAID 36" and british transit marks alongside, few slightly blunt perfs and one stamp 10c. toned perf, otherwise fine
1866, CHINA: Lincoln 15c. black and Franklin 30c. orange tied by grid to envelope with cds. "SALEM NOV 6" alongside to Zanzibar, endorsed "via Marseilles" and "care Adumally Sultanally, Esq., Merchant, Bombay", red "BOSTON BR. PKT. 7 NOV 40" credit handstamp and crayon "1" British colonial credit alongside, reverse with transit "BOMBAY DE 24", a fine and scarce entire. Albert P. Goodhue, the recipient of this cover, was a ship chandler and businessman from Salem, Massachusetts, who likely had a connection to Benjamin Goodhue, a commercial merchant and politician from the same area. Benjamin served in the state senate and later as a representative in the first U.S. congress, and played a significant role in shaping the country's revenue laws. His son, Jonathan, was also a successful commercial merchant.
