ITALY - TURKISH EMPIRE (ALBANIA), 1871, Lettersheet from Venice via Trieste and Antivari to Scutari, franked for the distance to Antivari with  1863, 60 cmi. lilac, tied by dotted "196", in Antivari franked for the remaining way with Turkey 1869, 10 paras lilac and postage due 2 pia. with blue all Arabic double circle. The 2 pia. slightly affected by horizontal cover crease, still fine and scarce.
 

NETHERLANDS - GREECE: 1853, unpaid entire letter from Amsterdam via Prussia and Trieste to Athens, taxed with a total of "140" lepta to be paid by receipient, which included 6 kreuzer dutch postage, 9 kreuzer German Postal Union share and 9 kreuzer sea postage. Several transit- and arrival marks on reverse. Certificate Puschmann (2003)

NETHERLANDS - HOLY LAND: 1868, small envelope from "UTRECHT 14 MRT 68" to Jerusalem, bearing 1867-69 King William 10c. lake and 20c. green, tied by framed "franco", paying the single letter rate. On front of the envelope shows manuscript "wf2" sgr. credit to Prussia in blue and red "4" kr. credit to Austria, on reverse framed "EMMERICH/OBERHAUSEN", oval "TRIEST" and "GERUSALEMME /4/4" arrival mark of the Austrian PO. The adhesives with slight marginal staining and 20 c. rounded corner at lower right, otherwise fine. A very rare item; the only recorded letter from the Netherlands via Trieste to the Holy Land.

NETHERLANDS - DUTCH INDIES: 1871, double rate letter from "ROTTERDAM 3 JUL 71", endorsed "via Triest" to Padang with arrival mark (19.8.) on reverse, franked with 2 copies each 1867, 50 c. gold (small corner crease resp. paper break) and 5 c. blue. Despite the faults an attractive and scarce entire; just 5 % of the mail from the Netherlands to it's colonies in Asia were transported via Triest.

PORTUGAL - TURKISH EMPIRE: 1865, lettersheet from Lisbon to Smyrna, franked with 1862/64, 5, 10, 25 and 100 (2) reis, tied by numeral "1" with adjacent "LISBOA 19/8 65" and boxed "P.D."; on reverse transit marks of railway "VERVIERS/COELN" and Trieste and arrival mark of the Austrian PO. Two stamps cut into, otherwise mostly ample to good margins. An attractive and rare 4-colour franking; the only recorded letter from Portugal via Trieste to Turkey. SWITZERLAND - JAPAN: 1870, entire letter to Yokohama, franked with 1862/81, 5 c. ocre, 20 c. orange and 30 c. light ultramarine in strip of 3, cancelled by straight line "NEUKIRCH a/Th" and additionally tied by cds "BÜRGLEN 5 JUNI 70". The letter is endorsed "Via Triest&Suez", on reverse transit marks of Vienna and Hongkong and arrival mark of the British PO. The left stamp of the strip lightly affected by horizontal cover crease, the 20 c. missing corner perf at lower right, otherwise very fine and fresh, especially for this exotic destination. UNITED STATES - GREECE: 1860, envelope from New York to Athens, franked with 1857/61, 1 c. blue as 'Carrier fee', tied by "23 NEW YOR AM. PKT. OCT. 29"; endorsed "Via England" but transported via Prussia and Trieste with red "Aachen 3 12" on reverse next to arrival mark (in mistake 3.11., Julian calendar). On front noted in blue crayon "55 10 15" neukreuzer for the conveyance from New York to the Greek harbour and in red crayon the total due of "255" lepta to be paid by the recipient. A very fine and most likely unique part paid letter to Greece. Signed Holcombe and Todd

UNITED STATES - TURKISH EMPIRE: 1870, cover from Middleborough, Mass. to Constantinople, franked with 1869, pictorial issue 15 c. type II ; adjacent "NEW YORK NOV. 5"; on reverse arrival mark "NORDDEUTSCHE POST-AGENTUR....." which was in use only from march 1870 till may 1871. A fine and scarce  entire from the well known Washburn correspondence. (Scott 119)

UNITED STATES - EGYPT: 1860, envelope with imprint "U.S. Customs House, New Orleans. Collector's Office. Official Business" and endorsed "George S. Denison Spe. agt. & act. Coll. of Customs" to the Consul general at Alexandria, franked with 1861/67, 3 c. rose in block of 15, tied by "New Orleans La. Dec. 9, 1864" cds. and additional target cancels. The franking covered the rate via great Britain, but the letter was forwarded via Aachen (29.1.) and Trieste (1.1.), arrival mark of the Austrian PO (11.1.). Very Fine and highly exhibitable. UNITED STATES - CHINA: 1858, part paid lettersheet from "PROVIDENCE R.I. FEB. 23 1858" via Prussia, Trieste and Alexandria to Hongkong. Prepaid with 38 cents till Alexandria and taxed here with "1/-" for the conveyance to Hongkong, to be paid by the recipient. Just 5 letters from The US via Trieste to China have been recorded.

IONIAN ISLANDS-AUSTRIA, 1835, unpaid entire letter from Corfu to Trieste with fancy "CORFU 27 NOVEMBRE 1835" on reverse and oval "OFFICIO DE LA POSTA GENERALE CORFU" on front next to blue "Jonia" with matching blue "TRIEST 12 DEZEMBER" on revers. Taxed in Trieste with "15/20" kreuzer c.m.

IONIAN ISLANDS-AUSTRIA, 1841, prepaid entire letter from Zante to Trieste with fancy "ZANTE 27 APRILE 1841" on reverse and "CORFU 29 APRILE 1841" on front; unusual rating in red crayon on front, "18" kreuzer prepayment noted on reverse. Entire with desinfection slits, very fine.

IONIAN ISLANDS-AUSTRIA, 1859, Entire prepaid letter from "ITAKA 16 JUNE (5)9" to Triest, as usual franked in transit (the little town had not yet been supplied with stamps) with 1859, 1 d. blue for the internal Ionian postage, tied by fancy "KEFALONIA 1859 JUNE 17" with adjacent matching blue boxed "FRANCA"; on reverse manuscript "15" (new kreuzer) in red crayon indicating the paid sea postage to Trieste; arrival mark of June 22nd. A rare and most attractive letter posted on the 2nd day of issue of the Ionian postage stamps. Signed Giulio Bolaffi with certificate (1966) and Alberto Diena with certificate (1962) (SG 2)

TURKISH EMPIRE - PRUSSIA: 1857 (ca.), unpaid envelope from the Austrian post office at Trabzon with black double line "TREBIZONDA 7. SETT." to Berlin. At Trieste boxed "71/4" (silbergroschen) due applied, to be paid by the recipient. A rare early cover from Trabzon to central Europe.

TURKISH EMPIRE - GERMAN EMPIRE: 1871, printed matter lettersheet from the German PO at Constantinople to Ölsnitz with arrival mark, franked with North German Confederation 1869, 1/3 gr. green and 1/2 gr. orange, tied by cds. "KAISERL.DEUTSCH.P.A. CONSTANTINOPEL 14/10 71". The stamps with tiny toning in the upper perforation, the cover with desinfection slits, not affecting the stamps. A very fine and rare entire; just 3 similar printed matters recorded.Certificate Bothe BPP (1979)

"KAISERL.DEUTSCH.P.A. CONSTANTINOPEL 14/10 71". Die Marken mit winziger Tönung in der oberen Zähnung; der Umschlag mit Desinfektionsschlitzen, die die Marken nicht beeinträchtigend. Ein sehr schönes und seltenes Ganzstück; wir haben nur 3 ähnliche Drucksachen registriert.

At Trieste tax mark "7" (silbergroschen) applied for the conveyance from smyrna to Aachen, here "7½" applied for the non-british postage due, to be completed by the british share of 4 d. to a total due of "1/1" to be paid by the receipient.

TURKISH EMPIRE - GREAT BRITAIN: 1865, lettersheet with part of contens from Constantinople to London, franked with 3 copies Austrian Levante 1864, 15 so. brown, tied by single circle "CONSTANTINOPEL 18/2"; adjacent tax stamp "F.14" (credit 14 kreuzer) of Aachen; very fine.

TURKISH EMPIRE - NETHERLANDS: 1859, unpaid entire letter from the Austrian PO at Smyrne to Amsterdam (contens: delivery of turkish ginger to the Netherlands), rated in blue crayon "20/25" new kreuzer, at Trieste tax mark "7" (silbergroschen) applied for the conveyance from smyrna to the dutch border; including 10 cents dutch internal rate the receipient was charged with a total of "55" cents.
 

TURKISH EMPIRE - SWITZERLAND: 1864, unpaid entire letter from the Austrian PO at Constantinople to Zürich , rated in manuscript "20/25" new kreuzer for sea postage to Triest and the conveyance from Trieste to Zürich, in Wurttemberg rated "23" kreuzer Southern German currency till the Swiss border and in Zürich charged with a total of "90" rappen to be paid by the receipient.

TURKISH EMPIRE (AEGEAN ISLANDS) - AUSTRIA: 1866, lettersheet with part of text from Mytilene to Trieste, franked with Austrian Levante forerunner 1863, 5so. rose and 1864, 15 so. brown, tied by clear "METELINE 28/9". Desinfection slits, one affecting the 15 so. at bottom. Fine and attractive.

TURKISH EMPIRE (CRETE) - AUSTRIA: 1869, entire letter to Trieste, franked with Austrian Levante forerunner 1864, 5 so. rose and 1867, 10 so. blue, tied by clear "RETTIMO 15/2". A scarce combination, very fine and attractive.

TURKISH EMPIRE (CYPRUS) - AUSTRIA: 1871, entire letter to Trieste, franked with Austrian Levante 1867, 5 so. rose and 1867, 10 so. blue, tied by cds. "LARNACA DI CIPRO 26/5". A scarce letter, very fine and attractive.

TURKISH EMPIRE (DODECANESE) - AUSTRIA: 1866, entire letter, dated inside "Symi Apr. 30/ 12 mai 1866" to Trieste, franked with Austrian Levante 1864, 5 so. rose and 1867, 15 so. brown, tied by double line "RHODUS 6 MAG.". Some very minor staining, otherwise very fine. An interesting letter from a small Island.

TURKISH EMPIRE (THESSALY) - AUSTRIA: 1870: Entire letter  from Volos to Trieste, dated inside '11/23 July 1870' (Gregorian resp. Julian calender), franked with Egypt 1867, 1 pi. red,tied by black 'retta' as the Volos Consular Post Office datestamp had yet to be placed in use. The cover travelled with the Khedivial Mail Line to Syros with frontside "SYROS 12 JULY 70", rated '25' lepta in blue crayon (equal to 10 kreuzer to be paid by the receipient) and was forwarded to the Austrian Lloyd express line from Constantinople to Triest.; on reverse Trieste arrival cds (July 28). An outstanding and unique entire - the Consular Office on Volos was announced to open on July 14, 1870, thus this cover was mailed on the second of the (weekly) services. Signed A. Diena, A. TURKISH EMPIRE (LEBANON) - UNITED STATES: 1865, cover from Beirut to Washington D.C., franked with Austrian Levante 1864, 10 so. blue and 4 copies 15 so. brown, tied by single circle "BERUTTI 23/11"; adjacent red crayon "50" soldi foreign postage corresponding to red "AACHEN paid 23 cts", and red "N. YORK AM. PKT. PAID 1865 24 DEC.". 10 so. slightly damaged at top, where affixed over the edge of the cover and few shortish perfs, otherwise very fine with usual slight transportation marks. A scarce early cover from the Levante to the United States.

EGYPT - DENMARK: 1857, unpaid entire letter from Alexandria to Aalborg, dated inside "31er October 1857", showig on revers forwarding agent handstamp "DUMMREICHER FRERES & Co. ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE", on front "COL VAPORE D'ALESSANDRIA" next to blue boxed "6¼" (silbergroschen) of Triest for the conveyance to the danish border, corresponding with manuscript "8½" Hamburg shilling. In Denmark a total of "36" skilling were charged to the receipient, including 8 skilling internal Danish postage. An interesting letter with scarce destination.

EGYPT - TUSCANY: 1856, entire letter from Alexandria to Livorno, showing on front  black oval "FORWARDED BY MESS.RS BRIGGS & CO." and cds. "TRIEST 28 12 Früh", Livorno arrival mark of 1.1. 1857 on reverse. The letter was charged with "12" kreuzer c.m. resp. "8" crazie Tuscany currancy, to be paid by the receipient

EGYPT - ITALY, 1869, Entire letter from Cairo via Alexandria and Trieste to Genova, franked with 1867, 20 para green and 2 piastre blue, tied by cds. "V.R. POSTE VICE_REALI EGIZIANE CAIRO 19 MARZ 69" with adjacent "Franca"; on reverse transit- and arrival marks. Very fine and fresh. Certificates Enzo Diena (1987) and BPA (2001)

MAURITIUS-NORTH GERMAN FEDERATION: 1869, small wrapper endorsed "Via Trieste" and franked with DLR 1 d. brown, tied by duplex "MAURITIUS AU 26 69" to Danzig, Prussia, showing on front blue "FORWARDED BY SCOTT & CO. MAURITIUS". Although the wrapper was correctly franked, it was not accepted as printed matter and charged "1/1" (equal 11 sgr.) for the letter rate via England. A fine and interesting item.
