Steamer", franked with postal stationery cutout coat of arms 5 neugroschen grey lilac, cut to shape, and 1863/67, 1 neugroschen rose (vertical crease) for the route to Alexandria, here taxed with "1/-" in black for the conveyance to Hongkong. Transit postmarks of Trieste (13 May) and Alexandria (25 May) and Hong Kong arrival mark (4 July) on front and back. An attractive cover with a rare franking and destination. SAXONY - DUTCH INDIES: 1863, entire 2nd weight letter of the well-known Schierbrand correspondence from Leipzig to Batavia, endorsed "Per Landmail via Trieste", franked with three single copies 10 neugroschen blue, one value slightly touched on top, otherwise all with full to wide margins, in mixed franking with coat of arms 3 neugroschen brown. The postage consists of 6 neugroschen Postal Union postage and 26 8/10 neugroschen foreign share, noted on the front; on the reverse Trieste tax notation "30/ 1f4" (30 neukreuzer sea postage Trieste-Alexandria and 1 gulden 4 neukreuzer British postage Alexandria-Singapore). Charged at Batavia with "100" cents for transport from Singapore by Dutch ships. An attractive and very rare high franking. Certificate Rismondo BPP (2000)

1863, kompletter Faltbrief der 2. Gewichtsstufe der bekannten Schierbrand-Korrespondenz von Leipzig nach Batavia mit Leitvermerk "Per Landmail via Trieste", frankiert mit drei Einzelwerten 10 Neugroschen blau, ein Wert oben leicht berührt, sonst alle voll- bis breitrandig, in Mischfrankatur mit Wappen 3 Neugroschen braun. Das Porto setzt sich zusammen aus sechs Neugroschen Vereinsgebühr und 26 8/10 Neugroschen Weiterfranko, dieses vorderseitig vermerkt, rückseitig Triester Taxvermerk "30/ 1f4" (30 Neukreuzer Seepostporto Trieste-Alexandria und 1 Gulden 4 Neukreuzer britisches Porto Alexandria-Singapur). SAXONY - AUSTRALIA (New South Wales): 1863, envelope from "DRESDEN NEUST: 20 11 62", endorsed "Via Trieste" to Yathang near Deniliquin, New South Wales, with transit marks of Vienna, Trieste, Melbourne, Geelong and Moama. The postage consists of 3 neugroschen Union postage, 3 neugroschen sea postage for the Austrian Lloyd and 10 4/10 neugroschen British postage, the latter noted with "1/-" on the front in red crayon. Some small faults, the 5 neugroschen oxydized. An attravtive and extremely rare early letter to Australia. Certificate Vaatz BPP (2022)

THURN&TAXIS - IONIAN ISLANDS : 1860, entire folded letter from Offenbach to Corfu, franked with 2 singles 1852/58, 9 kreuzer on maize yellow and horizontal pair 1859/61, 1 kreuzer green, with arrival mark on front; the cover a bit brittle in the folds, but overall an attractive letter with rare destination, certificate Sem BPP (2015)

THURN&TAXIS – TURKISH EMPIRE: 1867, lettersheet from Gera to Constantinople, franked with 1859/61, 5 silbergroschen brown-purple, bottom margin skilfully repaired, otherwise full to large margins with parts of two neighbouring stamps, cancelled by no. "291". Despite endorsed "Via Triest", the dates of transit mark of Vienna and arrival mark prove that the letter was sent via Semlin and Belgrade. A rare single franking with an equally rare destination.

1867, Briefhülle von Gera nach Konstantinopel, frankiert mit 1859/61, 5 Silbergroschen braunpurpur, Unterrand kunstvoll ergänzt, sonst voll-bis überrandig mit Teilen von zwei Nachbarmarken, entwertet durch Nr. "291". Trotz des Leitvermerkes "Via Triest" belegen der Durchgangsstempel von Wien und Ankunftsstempel, dass der Brief über Semlin und Belgrad befördert wurde. Eine seltene Einzelfrankatur mit ebenso seltener Destination.

WURTTEMBERG – INDIA: 1853, entire letter from Böblingen to Tezpore, Assam, franked with 1851, 18 kr. on bluish violet with large margins, and two copies 1 kr. on chamois, one slightly touched at right. On reverse transit marks of Noerdlingen, Munich, Trieste and Alexandria, also "CALCUTTA STEAM LETTER 1853 Oct.2/ Bearing (8)". The 18 kreuzer with slight horizontal curl, otherwise very fresh and fine. A rare and most attractive letter.

1853, kompletter Faltbrief von Böblingen nach Tezpore, Assam, frankiert mit 1851, 18 Kr. auf blauviolett mit breiten Rändern, abwechselnd geklebt mit zwei Stück 1 Kr. auf sämisch, eine rechts leicht berührt. Rückseitig Transitstempel von Nördlingen, München, Triest und Alexandria, außerdem "CALCUTTA STEAM LETTER 1853 Oct.2/ Bearing (8)". Die 18 Kr. leichte horizontale Wellung, sonst sehr frisch und einwandfrei. Ein seltener und sehr attraktiver Brief.

WURTTEMBERG – INDIA: 1869, lettersheet from Stuttgart to Bangalore, franked with four singles 1868, 7 kreuzer slate blue, cancelled by red single-circle postmark "STUTTGART FIL.BUR.II 5 1"; transit postmarks of Vienna, Trieste and Bombay on reverse, framed "BOMBAY Bearing 2 Annas" on the front. Some unobtrusive small age spots, otherwise in good condition, especially for this destination. An attractive and rare letter to the subcontinent. 1871, Briefhülle von Hanau nach Syros, frankiert mit 1869, 1 Groschen rosa und 2 Groschen ultramarin im waagerechten Paar (ein Marke oben Einriss); kleiner Teil der Rückenklappe fehlt, sonst einwandfrei.

NORTH GERMAN FEDERATION – EGYPT: 1871, envelope from Bad Soden to Alexandria, franked with single piece and horizontal pair 1869, 1 groschen rose. On reverse transit mark of Trieste and arrival mark of the Austrian post office. One value minor marginal creasing, otherwise very fine and fresh.

1871, Briefkuvert von Bad Soden nach Alexandria, frankiert mit Einzelstück und waagerechtem Paar 1869, 1 Groschen rosa. Rückseitig Durchgangsstempel von Triest und Ankunftsstempel des österreichischen Postamtes. Ein Wert minimaler Randknitterung, sonst sehr schöne und einwandfreie Erhaltung.

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION-CHINA: 1868, letter sheet (one flap missing) from "SONDERBURG 21 5 68" via Trieste and Alexandria to Shanghai, prepaid with 3 copies 1868, 5 groschen ocre and single ½ groschen orange; in Alexandria GB 1 shilling green applied, tied by "B01". On reverse transit marks of Trieste and Hongkong, on front "ALEXANDRIA JU 5 68". The correct postage to East Asia since 1.1.1868 was 13½ groschen, but all recorded letters coming from the OPD Kiel are franked with 15½ groschen which seems to have been a special rate for the former duchies of Schleswig-Holstein. Some usual small transportation marks, but all together a fine and rare entire. This is the latest recorded date of an additional franking at Alexandria. Certificate RPSL (1978)

1868, Briefhülle (eine Seitenklappe fehlend) von "SONDERBURG 21 5 68" über Triest und Alexandria nach Shanghai, frankiert mit 3 Exemplaren 1868, 5 Groschen ocker und einzelner ½ Groschen orange; in Alexandria zusätzlich frankiert mit GB 1 Schilling grün, entwertet durch "B01". Rückseitig Transitstempel von Triest und Hongkong, auf der Vorderseite "ALEXANDRIA JU 5 68". Das korrekte Porto nach Ostasien war seit dem 1.1.1868 13½ Groschen, aber alle bekannten Briefe aus der OPD Kiel sind mit 15½ Groschen frankiert, wahrscheinlich ein Sondertarif für die ehemaligen Herzogtümer Schleswig-Holstein. Einige übliche kleine Transportspuren, aber insgesamt  ein schöner und seltener Brief mit dem letzten Verwendungsdatum der Zusatzfrankaturen von Alexandria.

NORTH GERMAN FEDERATION - JAPAN: 1868, letter sheet from Bremerhaven, endorsed "via Triest" to Yokohama, franked with 1868, 1 gr. rose, 2 gr. blue and 5 gr. ocre, all with fresh colour and well perforated, the 1 gr. with light paper fold,  very nicely cancelled by neatly applied blue 'key cancel' "BREMERHAVEN 2/12". On reverse transit marks of Trieste and Hong Kong as well as arrival mark of the British PO. Very fine and fresh. Only a handful of letters via Trieste to Japan have been recorded; with the re-used 'key cancel' a unique letter.

1868, Briefhülle von Bremerhaven mit Leitvermerk "via Triest" nach Yokohama, frankiert mit 1868, 1 Gr. rosa, 2Gr. blau und 5Gr. ocker, alle farbfrisch und gut durchstochen, die 1 Gr. mit unauffälliger Aufklebefalte, sonst einwandfrei, sehr schön entwertet durch zweimal sauber aufgesetztem blauem Schlüsselstempel "BREMERHAVEN 2/12", dieser zusätzlich unten nebengesetzt. Rückseitig Durchgangsstempel von Triest und Hongkong sowie Ankunftsstempel des britischen Postamtes. Sehr schöne frische und einwandfreie Erhaltung. Es sind nur eine Handvoll Briefe über Triest nach Japan bekannt; mit dem nachverwendeten Schlüsselstempel ein einmaliger Brief.

NORTH GERMAN FEDERATION – SOUTH AUSTRALIA: 1871, envelope to Hindmarsh, South Australia, franked with 1869,2 groschen ultramarine in a horizontal strip of four, fresh in colour and well preserved except for some missing perfs on one stamp at the top, cancelled with double circle "HOYER 9 1 71"; transit mark of Adelaide on front and arrival mark on reverse. The letter is correctly franked for transport via Trieste (effective June 1868) with 1 groschen inland postage and 7 groschen onward postage, noted on the front. The cover a little weak in the folds and partly separated, otherwise in good condition for this destination. A very rare letter to the 5th continent.

1871, Briefkuvert nach Hindmarsh, Südaustralien, frankiert mit 1869,2 Groschen ultramarin im waagerechten Viererstreifen, farbfrisch und bis auf einige Fehlzähne bei einer Marke oben gut erhalten, entwertet mit Doppelkreisstempel "HOYER 9 1 71"; vorderseitig Durchgangsstempel von Adelaide und rückseitig Ankunftsstempel. Der Brief ist nach dem Tarif vom Juni 1868 für den Transport über Triest korrekt frankiert mit 1 Groschen Inlandsporto und 7 Groschen Weiterfranko, diese vorderseitig notiert. Der Umschlag in den Faltungen etwas schwach und teils getrennt, sonst für diesen Transportweg gute Erhaltung. Ein sehr seltener Brief auf den 5.Kontinent

GREAT BRITAIN – RUSSIA: 1855, entire letter from Hull to , endorsed "via Belgium & Trieste" to the purser of "Steam Transport Cottingham 121, Post office Balaklava" with red "AUS ENGLAND PER AACHEN FRANCO". Balaklava was a main base of the British forces. An interesting Crimean War related letter with unusual routing.

GREAT BRITAIN – GREECE: 1862, entire letter from London to Patras, short paid by 2½ d., franked with 1856/62, 1 d. red (2), 4 d. vermilion and 6 d. lilac, all tied by barred "12", and marked "INSUFFICIENTLY PREPAID"; at Trieste taxed with "15" new kreuzer sea postage and in Greece with a total due of "65" lepta (including 20 lepta internal postage), franked with Paris printing 5 l. green and 40 l. lilac and First Athens printing 20 l. blue, all tied by numeral "9" of Patras. One 1 d. affected by horizontal crease, the other one scissors cut at 2 sides, in total some minor transportation marks, otherwise fine. A rare 6 colour franking.

GREAT BRITAIN – GREECE: 1865, unpaid lettersheet from "LONDON MY 1 65" via Aachen and Trieste to Athens, showing on front large blue handstamp"35" (Austrian kreuzer), applied at Aachen, crossed and altered into manuscript "15/15/20". At Athens charged with a total of "170" lepta to be paid by the recipient, franked with 1862/68, 10 lepta and 2 copies 80 lepta, all with full margins and neatly tied by Athens cds.. A very fine and scarce letter.

GREAT BRITAIN – GREECE: 1866, entire letter from "NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE AP 9 66", endorsed "via Belgium & Trieste" to Athens, franked with 2 copies 1865/67, 6 d. lilac, showing on front blue "AUS ENGLAND PER AACHEN FRANCO". 

GREAT BRITAIN (IRELAND) – TURKISH EMPIRE: 1856, small size postal stationery envelope 1 penny rose (oxydized) with embossed  issue 1 shilling green, cut to shape, used from "MAGHERA SP 9 1856" to Beirut. The postage of 13 pence, equal to 11 ¼ silbergroschen,  included 3 silbergroschen each Britisch and GPO share, 1  silbergroschen Belgian transit and 4 ¼  silbergroschen postage beyond Trieste. Very rare usage of the Postal Stationary 1d-pink envelope to Beirut, only one other usage recorded from the same correspondence.

GREAT BRITAIN – TURKISH EMPIRE: 1871, lettersheet from "NOTTINGHAM MY 9 71", endorsed "via Belgium & Trieste" to Beirut, franked with pair 1865/67, 3 d. rose, showing on front arrival mark of the Austrian PO. One stamp rounded corner, otherwise fine.

SARDINIA – INDIA : 1857, entire letter from Turin to Calcutta, part paid till Alexandria, franked with 1855/63, 40 c. vermilon (2) and 20 c. blue, all with good margins, tied by cds. "TORINO 15 GIU 57". At Alexandria charged with 1 shilling for the conveyance to India, with corresponding "CALCUTTA STEAM LETTER 1857 JUL 31 / Steamer B(earin)g Indian Ds. 8" on reverse. A fine and rare letter.

TUSCANY – TURKISH EMPIRE (CYPRUS): 1857, unpaid entire letter fom Livorno to Cyprus, taxed on front with 9 kreuzer Austro-Italian Postal Union rate and 12 kreuzer sea postage from trieste to Larnaca and showing on front clear double line "LARNACA 1. APR." of the Austrian post.

ITALY - OTTOMAN EMPIRE (ALBANIA):  1869, entire letter  from Venice via Trieste and Antivari to Scutari, franked for the distance to Antivari with  1863, 60 cmi. lilac, tied by dotted "196", in Antivari franked for the remaining way with Turkey 1869, postage due 1 pia., tied by blue all Arabic double circle. Very fine and scarce. Certificate Enzo Diena (1986)

NORWAY - INDIA: 1852, part paid entire letter from Horten to Cochin, sent via Sweden-Hamburg and Trieste, pre-paid with 37 skilling, including 19 skilling to Hamburg and 18 skilling (= "6¼" silbergroschen) German/Austrian postage till Alexandria. In India charged for the remaining voyage with "9" annas.  The thin paper with some small defects, still fine and very rare; probably the only letter from Norway to India.

POLAND – TURKISH EMPIRE (LEBANON/SYRIA): 1869, cover with original contens from Pilica to Forwarding agent Weber & Co. at Beirut, to be forwarded to Dr. Eugen Prym in Syria; showing on front bilingual despatch mark, straight line "POLOGNE" and Beirut arrival mark.

Eugen Prym (1843 – 1913) was a German orientalist, who specialized in Semitic languages, especially Arabic and Aramaic. He studied comparative linguistics and Oriental languages at the universities of Berlin, Leipzig and Bonn, receiving his doctorate in 1868. From November 1868 he carried out linguistic research for one and a half years in the Middle East with Albert Socin,. 

POLAND – TURKISH EMPIRE (LEBANON/SYRIA): 1869, cover with original contens from Pilica to Beirut, posted in Szczakowa, franked with Austria 1867, 5 kreuzer red and 2 copies 10 kreuzer blue, to be forwarded to Dr. Eugen Prym at Damascus (note on reverse). On front Beirut arrival mark and reverse transit mark of Trieste.

POLAND – EGYPT: 1863, envelope, pre-paid with 38 copecks from Lublin via Prussia and Trieste to Cairo, showing on front clear red "AUS POLEN über EISENB.POST-BUR. XI./FRANCO" and on reverse Trieste transit mark and black resp. blue handstamps of Alexandria resp. Cairo POSTA EUROPEA. A very rare cover to an overseas destination.

POLAND – EGYPT: 1868, cover with original contents from Pilica to Cairo, posted in Szczakowa, franked with Austria 1867, 5 kreuzer red and 2 copies 10 kreuzer blue, addressed to be forwarded to Dr. Eugen Prym. On reverse transit marks of Trieste and Alexandria next to arrival mark.

RUSSIA – GREECE: 1866, entire letter from Rostov/Don via Odessa and Trieste to Syros, franked with 1865, 1 kopeck, 3 kopeck and three copies 10 kopecks (one with crease), tied by cds. and single circle "FRANCO". In Greece charged with 140 lepta, franked with 1862, 20 lepta, 40 lepta and 80 lepta with mostly good margins. A fine and rare combination letter. Signed Tseriotis.

SWEDEN – EGYPT: 1866, envelope from Engelholm via Trieste to Alexandria, charged at Trieste with "30/10" kreuzer for the distance to resp. from Trieste. The letter was undeliverable and returned, showing on front boxed "MAI CHIESTA" and on the reverse several transit- and arrival marks. A rare early cover from Sweden to Africa.

SWEDEN – CHINA: 1863, opened out cover from Engelholm via Hamburg, Triest, Alexandria and Hongkong to Shanghai, franked with 1858, 5 oere green, 9 oere violet, 30 oere brown and 3 copies 50 oere lilac. 2 values with creases where applied around the edge of the cover and one 50 oere with some flat perfs, some minor toning. Still a fine and very attractive entire of great rarity. This is the  only recorded fully franked letter from Sweden via Trieste to Asia prior UPU. Certificate Dr. Helena Obermüller-Wilen (2004)

SWITZERLAND – TURKISH EMPIRE: 1857, unpaid lettersheet with part of contents from St Gallen to Constantinople, showing on front superb strike of rare boxed tax mark "3-5/2-20" for 3 piastres 5 paras Swiss/Postal Union fee and 2 piastres 20 para postage beyond Trieste, to be paid by the recipient.

1857, unbezahlte Briefhülle mit einem Teil des Inhalts von St. Gallen nach Konstantinopel, vorderseitig der seltene Taxstempel "3-5/2-20" für 3 Piaster 5 Paras Schweizer/Postvereins-Gebühr und 2 Piaster 20 Para Porto jenseits von Triest, das vom Empfänger zu bezahlen war.

SWITZERLAND – TURKISH EMPIRE: 1869, lettersheet from Zürich to Trebizonde, franked with 1863, 60 centimes bronze. Although the letter was overpaid by 10 centimes, it was treated as underpaid and marked "AFFR.INSUF"; on the border this was corrected and "40" centimes foreign share noted in red crayon, changed on the German side into "7" kreuzer. 1869, Briefhülle von Zürich nach Trabzon, frankiert mit 1863, 60 Rappen bronze. Obwohl der Brief um 10 Rappen überfrankiert war, wurde er als unterfrankiert behandelt und mit dem Stempel "AFFR.INSUF" versehen; an der Grenze wurde dies korrigiert und "40" Rappen Auslandsanteil in roter Kreide vermerkt, auf der deutschen Seite in "7" Kreuzer geändert.

SWITZERLAND – EGYPT: 1869, entire letter to Cairo, franked with 1862/81, 20 centimes orange and 30 centimes blue, tied by straight-line "NEUKIRCH" and additional Bürglen cds., sent via Vienna,  Trieste and Alexandria, here additionally franked with Egypt 1867, 1 piastre red, tied by cds. "POSTE EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 12 NOV.69 3T." The 30 centimes affected by not disturbing vertical filing crease, otherwise fine and fresh. A very rare combination franking, just two similar letters recorded from Switzerland. Certificate Rellstab (1990)

"POSTE EGIZIANE ALESSANDRIA 12 NOV.69 3T." Die 30 Centimes mit nicht störendem senkrechten Briefbug, sonst gute und frische Erhaltung. SWITZERLAND – STRAITS SETTLEMENTS: 1870, entire letter from Zürich to Singapore, franked with 1862/67, 5 centimes brown, 10 centimes rose and two copies 50 centimes lilac, tied by cds. "ZÜRICH 30.IX.70"; on reverse transit mark of Vienna and arrival mark. On the front noted "1.03" Swiss franks in blue for the Austrian share and "25" new kreuzer in the red for the British share.  One 50 centimes somewhat rounded corner, where applied at the edge of the entire, otherwise very fine and fresh. A rare letter. This route was the most expensive at that time, but most likely chosen due to the German-French War. Certificates Renggli (1996) and Eichele (1999)

1870, kompletter Faltbrief von Zürich nach Singapur, frankiert mit 1862/67, 5 Centimes braun, 10 Centimes rosa und zwei Stück 50 Centimes lila, mit EKr. "ZÜRICH 30.IX.70"; rückseitig Transitstempel von Wien und Ankunftsstempel. Auf der Vorderseite notierte "1.03" Schweizer Franken in blau für den österreichischen Anteil und "25" neue Kreuzer in rot für den britischen Anteil.  Eine 50 Centimes etwas abgerundete Ecke durch Randklebung, sonst sehr schöne und frische Erhaltung. Ein seltener Brief. Dieser Leitweg war damals der teuerste, wurde aber wahrscheinlich wegen des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges gewählt. Fotoatteste Renggli (1996) und Eichele (1999)

GREECE – AUSTRIA: 1836, entire letter from Syra via Athens to Trieste, prepaid with 90 lepta, noted on reverse. On front oval greek "PAID" and boxed "GREECE".

GREECE – RUSSIA: 1862, fully franked entire letter from Patras via Trieste and Brody to Taganrog, franked with 1862/71, 20 lepta blue, 40 lepta lilac and 80 lepta rose, all with mostly good margins. The letter is correctly franked with 20 lepta Greek inland postage and 120 lepta foreign share, consisting of 15 Austrian neukreuzer Sea postage to Trieste, 15 neukreuzer conveyance from Trieste to Brody and 10 neukreuzer Russian postage. A fine and scarce letter to abroad.

TURKISH EMPIRE – AUSTRIA: 1868, entire letter from Constantinople to Vienna, franked with 1867, 25 soldi grey lilac. Stamp with light horizontal bend, otherwise fine. A scarce single franking. Opinion Dr. Ferchenbauer (1991)
