2Katalog-Nr.1-2 reprint
1847 Post Office 1d. and 2d., the 1911/12 reprints in black, orange and blue from the original plate, on ungummed paper. Slight marginal faults, still fine and rare. 2 sheets signed Jakubek.
1864/71, 6 d. red-brown, 15 copies incl. a strip of 5 and a strip of 3, tied to front and reverse of opened out registered linen envelope 1867 from Okarito (manuscript note on reverse; a gold mining township of 1500 residents in 1866, today 30) with 3 copies 1 s. yellow-green applied in transit and Hokitika to Darmstadt in Germany, transported via Christchurch and on the 17th. voyage by the "Ruahine" via Panama and London with frontside "REGISTERED LONDON". Apart of the address deleted and few imperfections, but still fine and quite fresh. This is the highest recorded franking of this issue and one of 10 entires of the Chalon issues addressed to Germany. It has been suggested that the small Okarito Post Office may have run out of stamps with the quantity of 6d. values on this cover, and that an extra 3 x 1/- were added in transit at the Hokitika Post Office. Certificate RPS (2006)
Provenance: Maurice Burrus (1963), John Woolfe (Spink, 2006)
Reference: No. 2340 in the RPSNZ
1996, Children´s Health Stamps “Road Safety”, $2.60 miniature sheet with the 40 c. value in the unissued design showing teddybear at top right and value at lower left, mint never hinged, fine.
Note: It was not until a few weeks before issue when New Zealand Post sent out publicity material for their new Children´s Health Stamps advertising Road Safety that it was noticed, the baby pictured in the 40c design appeared to be facing forward, whilst in New Zealand Children under six Months are required to be facing the rear when travelling in a car seat. The design was thus hastily redrawn the week before issue and the teddybear omitted so as to avoid any indication of direction. Perhaps inevitably however a small number of the stamps printend in the original design came into the hands of collectors, it is presumed directly through the printers Joh. Eschede. These exist both as singles and miniature sheets, the latter with or without surcharge of a Capex´96 logo in the bottom right margin.
